The ones you see on TV are the ones they catch.  The actual odds of getting away from them are more like 50-50 nationwide, but the Popos aren't keen on advertising that fact.  Their odds are vastly improved where they have the helos aloft, FLIR, etc., which tells you that where they don't have those kind of assets, there is considerably better than an even chance of eluding them.  Woe betide he who tries and fails, of course.

Bottom line, once the choppers are involved, especially long enough for the ghost of Hal Fishman and KTLA/KCAL/KABC to pick up on it, dude(s) are pretty much 100 percent certain to be Code 4 at some point.

BTW--Freedumb--when the hell did Amezcua go over to Fox 11?

I saw that on TV today... I was wondering what the hell was going on.

Police chase suspects through three counties

A high speed chase that wove through three counties came to a calm end in Boca Raton early this afternoon when the passenger, a robbery suspect, got out of his car, took a seat in a patio chair in the backyard of a private house and lay on the ground as officers approached to arrest him.

The car's female driver was also arrested and is in custody.

The chase apparently started with reports of robberies in Miami and Miami Beach, said Det. Juan Sanchez, spokesman for the Miami Beach Police Department. Police recognized a white minivan from a "be-on-the-lookout" alert at Northwest 14 Street and North Miami Avenue and tried to pull it over, sparking the pursuit.

I was hoping to see a live-on-TV beatdown.  I feel cheated.  :bird:

Much less the copters.  I did an informal count the other day and in Los Angeles there are 24 News copters in the air at any given moment.  That doesn't count the cop-copters.

Sure seems like it, doesn't it?  I don't know how many times I've seen a cop chase from the freeway (a few times on the 405, 105, you get the idea) where the dude was getting chased by like 10 police cars, a CHP/LAPD chopper nice and low, and above that, it looked like the beach scene from Apocalypse Now.

Of course there is a down side to that too.  Case in point, the two news choppers in Phoenix that collided while covering a high speed chase, about 2 years ago, I think.  That airspace can get awfully crowded in an awful big hurry when everybody's pushing the envelope for the best camera angles.

They are pretty good at it in L.A. -- probably because so much of the space is FTC controlled: between LAX, BUR, Van Nuys, John Wayne, ONT, Brackett, etc. damn near all of the airspace requires constant communication with controllers.  Most copters have the reporter and the pilot -- and the pilot keeps his head on a swivel and his location closely tracked.

The Phoenix accident was over downtown Phoenix, within 5 miles of PHX (and thus under tower control all the way to the ground), and the choppers had a dedicated channel on Com2 for communications between pilots.  Apparently, according to the AAR, the one (lower chopper) lost sight of the ship above him, and then violated altitude separation, colliding with the higher ship from almost directly beneath.

Sad.  I have never heard of a news chopper collision in L.A.

But stranger things have happened.
