Quote
THIS amazing image of a mammoth spider devouring a bird was taken in the backyard of a property near Cairns.

The image, which is being cirulated via email worldwide, is real, according to wildlife experts, The Cairns Post reported.

The photo, believed to have been taken earlier this week, shows the spider clenching its legs around a lifeless bird trapped in a web at a property near Atherton, west of Cairns.

Carins is, apparently, in Australia.  Don't they have lots of monsters down there?

A friend told me a story of looking at some kind of spider on a wall when visiting there for some reason, I think it had to do with her degree, and an Australian pulled her back because it was the kind of monster spider that leaps onto people and things inflicting great painful and bites.  Maybe even deadly, it's been some times since I heard this story.

Bottom line is, nature has some terrible monsters and it is good to pave as much of her over as possible.

Sorry for not making it clear, I just assumed everyone would have heard of Cairns which of course would not be the case. The spiders over there seem to be legion and deadly good idea about the paving.  :-)

He's probably not up yet--it's quite a different time zone--to see this.

You folks are afraid of that little thing?

Heck, I doubt it could even stand up to a 20 gauge shotgun blast, let alone any kind of manly gun.

Heh. I saw this story in the local fishwrapper yesterday. Nature at work.

It's a big spider but the pictures make it look bigger than what it really is.

The spider is, I believe a member of the golden orb family and they can get quite big. I had one for a while that lived on my back deck, it wasn't in the road of anything and I ain't afraid of no bug, so I let it stay until it was eaten by a bigger bird.

The shot didn't come out quite as intended but the legs are about 3" long from tip to body. It lived on a diet of large insects and ghekos. One could catch live cockroaches and throw them onto the web for drunken entertainment.

I don't think their bite would be *lethal* unless you developed an allergic reaction. That's not to say it wouldn't hurt like a sumbitch at the time. When I was a quite young, and the family was outdoors, I chose to wander over and take a peek at a disused building. Well, on the way out I walked face first into one of these webs. Of course as their web is remarkable strong and sticky , the whole thing , spider and all detached from the building and was being dragged along behind me as I tried to flee. Looking back on it I can see what the adults found funny, but *I* sure didn't see anything to laugh about at the time.

The Bird is a finch, about the size of a mouse. I have a cloud of em that eat from my feeder.

I'd note in closing that we have most of the worlds deadliest bugs and snakes up here. It's really less of a problem than most people would make out. At least we don't have bears. *shudder*

The History Channel had a couple episodes of Monster Quest on last night.  The first one I saw was cool, they were searching for a giant squid.

The second episode came on right as I was falling asleep...it was giant spiders!  I saw the first couple of minutes and then just changed the channel, I was worried I was going to have nightmares!

All things in nature have a place and that is what one needs to remember.

In general, I love spiders because they eat other bugs but when it comes to monsters, they need to be stopped by any means necessary.  Of course, if this spider also eats liberals, I could see my way to holding off of the paving... :-)

We had one outside of the building here a few weeks ago. I believe it was a Pennsylvania grass spider, but I'm not sure. Here's a pic.

It's body was as big as one of those bouncy balls ya get out of the machines for a quarter and it's legs were about as long as my pinky finger when fully outstretched. It seemed quite dosile, but I still wouldn't wanna screw with it.

You know, if spiders would just sit STILL, I wouldn't have a problem with them, but they have to scurry around, and that just heebs me out...blech!

Hey it could be worse. We could have to call in Clint Eastwood and his fellow pilots to deal with them.
