Anyone heard Credit Cards not being honored????

Mr. Dixie is driving out to Ca. on family business.

( I know it is not a good time, but he's got to go now)

I have been hearing rumors that credit cards are being rejected, but not debit cards.

Anyone have first hand info. about this?????

1. I only know gas stations give a discount for using cash instead of any kind of plastic. My business is still accepting credit cards, but then we're a small non-profit. Haven't gotten any notices that credit cards aren't being honored.

18. I just heard that at my post office yesterday morning about a few gas stations around here.

The one I uses accepts all for the same price, although I do only use cash.

2. What happens if you have a credit card from a bank that goes belly up?

Does it no longer work too?

16. It got taken over by JP Morgan right?

I guess all the banks are getting taken over by another institution.

17. I don't recall who took them over...

I got a change of address notice for the head office with my last savings acct statement, but still under the name WAMU.

3. I went to a mall yesterday in Cali and they took my debit card but a sign said no checks or credit cards. I don't know how epidemic this is. This was in the Sacramento area. I only bought something at a small shoe store in that mall. I don't know what the big stores were doing.

9. Is that something -new- for that particular store? Some places have never accepted them

which is really stupid but it's their choice...

5. hmm. no, I'm using them at the hotel.. I know that in some states gas stations will give you a discount on gas if you pay with cash.. the fees on credit cards for business.. esp. small businesses really suck.. so I know a lot of them have a min. purchase and perhaps, a few just want cash on hand and don't want to lose out on the enormous fee.

6. Some of my cards would be rejected for being too close to the limit, but no, I have not heard that cards are being rejected outright. I expect the card companies are still gleefully extending, or overextending far more credit than is healthy. My biggest concern is not that crds will be rejected, but that interst rates will arbitrarily jump. I suspect that credit card debt is a much bigger part of the current problem than we have been led to believe. Just remember, if you want to be a patriot, you have to be buying stuff on credit. It's the only way to defeat bin laden. w told me.

7. Not being honored? Geez, I'm constantly being asked to fill forms for more credit.

Since the big sink, I've had at least two mortgage offers and 5 credit card offers come in. I've used credit cards a few times and never had a prob.

14. We've been getting phone calls about refinancing mortage. I sense some real desperation from these guys to get the last bit they can from us before the shows over.

8. It's just that - rumours.

I work for a credit card company, our network doesn't issue debit cards and we're OK so far (touch wood).

In any case on travel it's always advisable to take two forms of payment with you - two credit cards from different banks and different networks will do just fine. I take my Amex, my bank debit card (visa) and my mastercard with me. Have all bases covered there.

There was also this rumour that Bank of America was about to stop honouring its credit cards. That rumour is bunk; not happening.

10. they are canceling credit cards for lack of use

this is not a rumor, it happened to us, and there was a post earlier on DU about others who have received the same notices

if you have a credit card that you have not been using, maybe holding it back to use only for an emergency, then it's possible that it has been cxl'd w.out your consent, at request of the issuer

this happened to me with chase but another poster said citibank was doing this also

if you want to keep a card only for vacations or for emergency, maybe use it once before you leave on the trip to be sure it is still good

they will notify you in snail mail but the letter looks like junk mail so it's possible you would not have read it

11. ARCO gas stations don't take credit cards, it's just a policy, says it helps keep their prices competitive - they're often lowest in the area. (Central CA)

I have never had a credit card refused in my life.

Maybe b/c I am a dumbshit and WORK for a living.

I can actually understand the DUmmies' concern. I don't use credit cards often, but at least I know they'll always work (since I always pay my bill on time, unlike teh DUmmies). I'd hate for a credit card transaction to be a crapshoot.
Never demand that which you are incapable of taking by force, DUmmie.

Actually, on a totally unpolitical board I am a member of, one of the posters had her card rejected, and she pays the balance in full each month.  SHe talked to the CC company (Am Ex, I believe) and they said they lowered her credit limit because of her location (Las Vega) being an area with a huge number of foreclosures.

The dummy may have a naild concern.
