GPS suggestions needed

I want to put an in dash stereo head unit w/GPS and need some advice. It has to be single DIN and I would like a flip out screen. Some have hideaway brain units that run off of a DVD and some have hard drives and real time GPS updating. I have looked at Kenwood, Pioneer, Dual and Eclipse. Prices range from a low of about $550 for the Dual to $1400 for the Eclipse. Any suggestions?

Didn't you learn basic map reading or landNav??  :o

Seriously, people are going to regret depending on so many electronic devices in order to meet their daily tasks. GPS is not as accurate as one should hope (but too accurate for my wishes). Then, if it ever goes "encrypted" again, it's pretty much useless. $1400 would buy a really nice rifle or handgun.   :-)

Seriously though.  I have toyed with the idea of getting a GPS just to play with.  Some of them look pretty neat.

But I find that I really don't want to spend the $$$ for one.

I have used Thomas Guides for many many years. I still have the last one I bought in my company car from 1998, lol.

I took a trip to the Colorado River a few weeks back and as I got close and called the woman I was meeting there for further directions....all i got was her voice mail. That pointed out a SERIOUS need for GPS. And I don't like the looks of all the wires from mobile GPS systems.

As far as being overly dependent on technology...TOO LATE!!!  :thatsright:

We bought early this summer.  We were going on vacation and then football season started.  We have to drive our boy all over Pennsylvania to games.  So far it has correctly directed us to ONE location. :bawl:  It couldn't even find my house until last week.  It does make funny noises when you speed though.

I think we spent $150. on a TomTom,, we absolutely love it. We zoomed around Charlestion just like we knew what we were doing..

I have a Garmin Nuvi 350.  I much prefer the portable variety.  It can be moved between cars or taken anywhere.  It is updated via a USB cable, and the first map update was free.

I agree plus, when technology moves along and it does rapidly you can toss it and go buy a new one. Those dash mounted varieties are way too costly imho.

I love my portable Magellen - would have a very hard time doing my sales job without it.

When we looked at in dash models I remember a preference for the pioneer - but don't remember why anymore.  And that was a year ago, so not much help - sorry.

But I didn't like the look of the wires hanging around. And this is actually for my personal car rather than my company car. If I were to get one for work it would be a portable. I am bidding on a Pioneer AVIC-N3 on eBay right now. I'm currently high bidder at $232 but theres still a full day to go.

If you get one that is portable, I strongly recommend a "bean bag" type of dash mount.  The suction cup types tend to wear out and fall off.  A GPS is one of the best toys tools I have ever bought.   :-)

I use one of these thing on one of the suction cup dash mounts.

It is accurate and fast enough to be able to navigate in country where tracks and roads are where you push them, and rugged enough to be able to be mounted on a dirt bike and dragged through all the really rough stuff that the 4x4 can't go on.

I think I am just going to bite the bullet and get a retail unit. eBay would save $$$ but would most likely be an exercise in frustration in getting the misc parts usually not included with used units. As an example I just bought a used headlight for my car and saved over $700 off the new price from a dealer. That was a single all inclusive unit and totally complete. Unfortunately GPS units are seldom that way.

Just a follow up to this thread I posted a while back about GPS. I did finally get a GPS unit. I found the chinese company that makes them for Pioneer.

This Pioneer AVIC-N4 unit is about $1500



This Qualir CGAQLL8008 was $440



They both have the same warranty and the Qualir can use several different maps rather than just Pioneer. Major Wootage!  :hyper:
