Bill Clinton: McCain 'A Great Man'; Praises Wife's, Not Obama's Economic Plan

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Former President Bill Clinton has largely kept himself out of the public eye since his wife lost the Democratic primary to Barack Obama.

However in a rare television interview tonight, the former president called Republican presidential candidate John McCain "a great man" and praised GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin as an "instinctively effective candidate."

On a day when Obama sought to convince voters that he's best able to handle the economic crisis, the former president said it was his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., who gave today "the most detailed position."

In an interview with CNBC's Maria Bartiromo, Clinton, who has tried to put to rest rumors of tensions between himself and Obama said, "I've never concealed my admiration and affection for Sen. McCain. I think he's a great man."

Just to elaborate, I don't think calling McCain "a great man" is "faint praise."  I think that this paragraph is telling, in his assessment of the race:

However, Clinton, said there could still be  "some unforeseen development," perhaps in the debates, he said, that could threaten a Democratic win.

"Barring some unforeseen development like in-- something happens in the debates we don't know about. I-- I-- I-- it may not be apparent in the polls until last week or two of the election. But, I believe that it will be apparent on election day.

He then goes on to say that he thinks that Obama will win, but it sure ain't high praise for the man who defeated his wife and interrupted his dreams of doing another two terms in the White House.

Bill also priases Sarah Palin--no surprise there, as it is rumored that he'd be a prospective Vice President Palin's first intern . . .

I have to disagree - pulling out helps keep any real Palin/Clinton debate from happening. And both of them at the same event would bring to everyone's mind the SNL skit which was far more tough on Hillary than Sarah.

I bet Obama is not too happy with the accolades given to the Repub. ticket. I think Bill is more pissed at the Magic Negro and his followers than Hillary.

I'm betting Hillary isn't to happy with Hussein either, it's just she can't as obviously snub him as Bill can because in 4 years she doesn't need the accusations.  With Bill, she can always say he has his own opinion or whatever.  And he's wording things in a subtle way that's hard to pin him down as actually trying to put the knife in.  Behind the scenes, it was hers, Hussein should have politely stepped aside, she still sees it that way, and that's not going to change.

In my opinion, the Clintons have traded their support for clearing their campaign debt. I'm betting that NObama agreed, but welshed on the agreement. As she STILL owes $9 M to "vendors". Either Barry comes up with the loot, or the Clinton support tremaines tenuous at best.

She has to play along if she wants the democrats support in 2012.  She'll do enough to show support..but she won't do anymore then she absolutely HAS TO.
