Pablo Escobar has been dead for more than three decades, but one part of his private zoo apparently never got the memo. Four hippos were brought to Hacienda Nápoles in the 1980s, one male and three females.

The introduction of hippos into the wild in Colombia has been marked by their rapid population growth and widespread dispersal on the landscape, high financial costs of management, and conflicting social perspectives on their management and fate. Here we use population projection models to investigate the effectiveness and cost of management options under consideration for controlling introduced hippos.

We estimate there are 91 hippos in the middle Magdalena River basin, Colombia, and the hippo population is growing at an estimated rate of 9.6% per year. At this rate, there will be 230 hippos by 2032 and over 1,000 by 2050.

Escobar died in 1993, but the hippos stayed, and then they got busy.

Colombia now estimates the population has passed 200. Without strong control measures, officials project roughly 500 hippos by 2030 and close to 1,000 by 2035.

Israel Blows Up Hezbollah Terror Tunnel Network

Israeli forces have blown up a terrorist tunnel complex close to Israel’s northern border, striking not only at Hezbollah, which built the tunnels, but at the Iranian regime, which backs Hezbollah.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) posted on X, “DISMANTLED: The underground infrastructure in the Ali al-Taher Ridge area, in the Security Zone, in order to neutralize Hezbollah’s ability to use this infrastructure to plan & carry out terror attacks against Israeli civilians & IDF soldiers.”

The IDF continued, “Dozens of Iranian-made rockets, missiles, UAVs, machine guns, and hundreds of mines & explosive devices, were located inside the underground infrastructure. Additionally, a central command complex belonging to Hezbollah’s ‘Badr’ Unit was located within the infrastructure. It contained command centers, weapon storage rooms, and living quarters that enabled terrorists to manage combat & remain underground for extended periods.”

Massachusetts' highest court publicly reprimands judge accused of enabling immigrant to escape ICE

The highest court in Massachusetts has publicly rebuked a district court judge over her role in a case involving an illegal immigrant who evaded arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

For Judge Shelley Joseph, the decision brings to a close a legal saga that began on April 2, 2018, when Jose Medina-Perez left the Newton District Court through a rear courthouse exit all while an ICE officer was waiting in the lobby to take him into custody.

The Supreme Judicial Court's ruling centered on a sidebar with Medina-Perez's attorney and the prosecutor during which Joseph instructed her clerk to shut off the courtroom's recording system.

"The respondent's statements during that conversation, including her proposal to detain Medina-Perez overnight in State custody, and her conduct in instructing the clerk to turn off the courtroom audio recording system, created an appearance of impropriety in violation of her duties," according to the Thursday ruling from the Supreme Judicial Court.
