6 hour layover in Miami next month -- what should I do?
« on: September 18, 2008, 10:42:53 PM »
I am an experienced traveler and can and will use the advantages from having status.

That means I don't need to be at the airport until probably 1-1/2 hours before departure.

I will be getting in there around noon.

Any Miamians or people who know the area that can give me suggestions for how to kill 3 or 4 hours?

I was thinking I would head to a resort Marriott (where I have Platinum Status), and watch the waves.

Any and all ideas gratefully accepted.

See if Burn Notice or Dexter are filming and be an extra.

I have never seen "Dexter" but Burn Notice is my favorite show these days.  I record it down to my Archos 604 and it really helps kill the time when I am in flight.

Hey, will someone from Miami weigh in, or will I just have to ""LOL" at all the jokesters?

Um yeah, a drive/walk along Ocean Blvd in Miami Beach can be quite, er, "entertaining".   :-)   The architecture is cool though.  You could also visit the Vanderbilt Hotel....very cool.

Depends when you get there. If you have to travel 95 during rush hour at all, cut that time you got down by half. I suggest go finding some gen xers and young people(and we are in abundance down there) Just sayin' :uhsure:(yes I'm a smart ass)

Seriously, maybe get over the Coconut Grove and have lunch there or something. There is a marina in walking distance from the better hotels. Don't be so stuffy and go sit on the edge of one of the piers or something. Maybe even get your feet wet. A girlfriend and mine sat out there after going to the funeral of our friend(who was 16 when she died). It's a beautiful place to think. Many other places will just take too much time like the Biscayne Natl. Park. You could go down to Miami Beach and sit out on one of the cafes on Collins Ave. too..maybe go get sand in your toes after since the beach is right across the street. Major art deco district and reallly beautiful. Have fun and watch out for those youngins ready to piss off old people. :uhsure:

I've just been to the Orange Bowl, a Holiday Inn on the beach, and the airport. I can tell you the hotel within the airport is incredibly expensive...fortunately for us...Delta footed the bill.

I'd go to the beach and eat oysters on the half shell.... :-)
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

That is pretty normal -- Airport Hotels are notoriously expensive.  When I have been stranded, I bill it back to the company, so I don't care that much.

Anyone know how far it is from the airport to the beach?  And what a reasonable cab fare would be?  And where the midget wrestling ring is?

Delta cancelled out flight out of Key West and sent us and the couple we were with.....by cab....up to Miami, put us up in the hotel in the airport itself until our flight out the next morning. No windows....but a whole wall of mirrors :naughty:. We each got a $20 food voucher. It didn't pay for 2 drinks a piece! :o

We drove up from KW to the Orange Bowl and Holiday Inn told me they were 15 minutes from the stadium.....only if you were in a Bell helicopter. We were an hour! After the game the only place we found open was a Denny's. We went back to KW first thing the next morning....it was warmer there!

We used to have about a 3hr layover from Atlanta to KW in Ft Lauderdale and we would go to an oyster bar on the intercoastal. Only long enough to eat a couple dozen oysters and get back.

Traffic around Miami is horrendous. The rental car drop-off is a couple miles away from the airport. We avoid flying into Miami.

If traffic is "reasonable" it's about a 20 min ride from the airport to Miami Beach/South Beach.  If you like to "people watch", that's the place to go, but it's hard to keep from  :rotf: out loud at some of them and what they are wearing...or not wearing.   :-)
