This is what I'm dealing with: Assignment I gave to one of my classes.....

Keep in mind, this is a college student.

I gave an assignment asking students to compare three different statues of human figures produced by three different cultures and discuss their differences. I specified that they had to choose from statues either discussed in class or provided in the course materials.

I covered all three cultures at length, and have a very robust supporting materials supplied to them as well.

The instructions for the assignments were given to them in writing, and I explained them verbally in class and asked if there were any questions.

This morning I got an email asking: "Do you have resources I can use or do I have to go out of my way to find the research?"

(and yes, this student was present when I gave out the assignment)

I supposed that it is possibly that what Coventina presented were so distorted or abstract that the student didn't recognize the examples as human. Or maybe the examples were visibly obviously male or female, and the student was afraid of the consequences of pointing out those facts.

It's more likely, sadly, that the college student is lazy, unmotivated, and nearly illiterate (i.e. (s)he thought Fun With Dick and Jane was a porno with Spot and Puff doing bestiality).

A product of liberal controlled education.

Very likely. Along with that, if this college student is a recent high school grad, their middle school or junior high years were video-school-at-home, courtesy of Covid and the teachers unions.

Reminds me of being an inquisitive child and asking my parents or grandparents a question about a word or fact? They'd immediately say "the dictionary is over on the shelf, so is the encyclopedia, so why don't you learn"?

Unless to satisfy a graduation requirement, her arts course sounds like something few STEM majors would willingly take. I've worked in "T" for mumble mumble decades. 19th Century English Lit would have been more to my taste.

1982, in my case. And invitations were rarely necessary in my case: I was one of those weirdos who would grab one at random and start reading just to fill time on a slow day.

When I try to imagine what this poster looks like, my mind conjurs images of...well...lets just say 5 foot 5, 240 pounds, noserings and purple hair.

Based on her having and hating her aging father, I'm guessing she's between 55 or 65 and a Karen-neighbor-from-Hell.

Maybe she's transitioning ... from double-chin to chin-neck merger?

My late Grandmother had all those in a bookcase (I've inherited both the bookcase and the World Books from the 60's, 70's, and 80's), and she'd tell me to go look things up. I also had a Websters and a Roget's close at hand for most of my life.

I have had family who were or are teachers and friends as well and I have never heard them complain about a student not being able to follow instructions. If you can't get your intent across as a teacher then maybe a career in either the janitorial services of the food craft industries are better for you.

A little late to the party because I was on spring break, but this is a case of a broken clock being right twice a day.  Way too many students, HS and MS, have no attention span, no retention, no initiative, and no reason to pay attention in class.  They are shuffled onto the next grade level regardless of performance to keep the school's numbers looking good, and treated like geniuses for providing 1st grade level work in HS and MS.  There have been many articles and reports about how colleges are having to provide remedial courses on almost everything, especially reading and math, because HS graduates don't have the knowledge and skills to do college level work, despite the diploma many of them can't read.

No, many of them have no clue how to listen to or follow directions, largely because of the way they are spoon fed almost everything, and the lack of consequences when they aren't working up to par.

Back in the mid 2000s when my son was taking classes at our local JC, he saw that many students were there just to stay on their parents' health insurance plans a few years longer. My son got the graduation requirement courses out of the way at JC prices and transferred to San Jose State for classes pertaining to his major (= something with a career path). So some of her students may just be time-servers keeping on their parents' health plans.
