Tennessee Schools Director Who Wants Lawmakers To Crack Down On Homeschooling Oversees District Where Only 1/3 Of Students Are Ready For Lifehttps://tennesseeconservativenews.com/tennessee-schools-director-who-wants-lawmakers-to-crack-down-on-homeschooling-oversees-district-where-only-1-3-of-students-are-ready-for-life/A Tennessee school director who wants lawmakers to crack down on homeschooling oversees a district where only a third of graduating seniors are ready for college or careers.
Among the four high schools in Greene County, the average composite score from the most recent ACT exam results was 18.5, down from 19.1 in 2024.
Under Tennessee’s state accountability system, a score of 21 out of 36 indicates college and career readiness.
Malone has said that he is concerned that some families use homeschooling as a way to avoid truancy issues or investigations by the Department of Children’s Services and has asked State Representative David Hawk (R-Greeneville-District 5) to address the issue in the upcoming legislative session starting January 13th, 2026.
There are now approximately 1,400 students in Greeneville and Greene County who are being educated at home. Malone reports that the number of homeschooled students had gone up about 200 since the beginning of the current school year.
Were Malone actually interested in academics he'd work to improve the PSs he oversees. He isn't. When he "sees" those 200 students his schools lost he sees the $2,000,000-$4,000,000 of annual ADA $$$$ his schools lost.
Were Malone actually concerned about children being abused, he'd make sure his own staff had zero abusers and were faithful about their mandatory-reporter obligation. He isn't. He also ignores the fact that school staff are far from the only mandatory reporters of child abuse in homeschooled families' lives. Malone simply sees every homeschooled student as $10,000-$20,000 annual ADA $$$$ his schools lost and he wants to intimidate homeschooling parents into enrolling in his PSs.
My family began homeschooling in 1987 and educated our children "K-12". All at least have an AA degree (not in Underwater Basket Weaving, BTW), and one has a BS and the Chinese equivalent of a BA (all classes taught in Mandarin). While our munchkins never took the ACT or SAT, homeschooled students who do on average score significantly higher than the PS student average.
