Tears this morning. I'm lucky. I've never had to use Meals on Wheels.

Our local newspaper is reporting that Meals on Wheels is now affected by the cuts in funding for food insecurity. Three hundred and fifty seniors who are basically shut ins are affected. Doesn't affect me - at least not YET - but I found myself sobbing. Because I care.

One local business has agreed to fund the program for 90 days. It is a very muchly Republican leaning operation, but I'm thankful they have agreed to help. Then what? Is this the goal? To make local businesses and taxpayers fund these programs because we can't stand to see our neighbors starve?

Makes me so damn mad. What in the hell are we paying taxes for? I want my taxes to feed the hungry; not feed another freaking billionaire.

Back before the federal, state, and local governments decided to tax everyone into oblivion, churches took care of stuff like that. In my area, they still to an extent, but everyone is taxed so much that there's not as much to donate to the churches so the churches are having to operate on shoe-string budgets.

In the NE KS small town (population ~2500) in which some of my relatives live, local churches have a rotation of the churches for providing certain kinds of aid.

Here in Silicon Valley, many churches have food banks, and some larger ones also aid community food banks such as Second Harvest. One local food bank gets their food provided by a local tech company in exchange for the company being able to use their parking lot as a commuter shuttle for company employees. I think MoW would do better if they worked more - they do quite a bit already, obviously - with local communities for funding and food supplies - local resources, local people providing services.
