A medical center caught in the crosshairs of an internet meltdown caused by one of its employees who cussed out a Target worker for wearing a Charlie Kirk T-shirt said that it was overwhelmed by thousands of “profanity-laced” messages.

Mike Wiltermood, president and CEO of California-based Enloe Health, said at a press conference Wednesday that the medical center had received more than 6,000 “profanity-laced” messages since the video went viral earlier in the day.

Wiltermood pleaded with the public to stop calling the center’s primary phone number, as the repeated calls “impeded our ability to serve patients and their families.”

Thursday will mark one year since Charlie Kirk was assassinated by a leftist on a Utah college campus. A day that should be one of reflection and national unity is instead reportedly being used by Georgetown University students to hold a Charlie Kirk look-alike contest.

Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet told Fox News Digital that the event is meant to mock Kirk, while a Georgetown University spokesman said that “making light of a victim of violence is counter to our values and deeply disappointing,” according to the New York Post.

Perhaps the ghoulish display of celebration of an assassination on Georgetown’s campus is unsurprising given that immediately after Kirk’s assassination, someone posted a flyer from the John Brown Club celebrating the political violence. The sign read: “Hey, Fascist! Catch! The only political group that celebrates when Nazis die.” As The Federalist’s Shawn Fleetwood pointed out, the phrase “Hey, Fascist! Catch!” refers to the engraving on one of the bullet casings that Kirk’s alleged killer planned to use in his attack. (The John Brown Club was not on the list of student clubs recognized by Georgetown at the time, as Fleetwood reported).

The cases reveal a longer-lasting consequence of the backlash: political disputes that began online have moved into workplaces, universities, and courtrooms, leaving some people fighting to recover jobs, income, and professional standing.

Putting the specificity of this being about Charlie Kirk on the shelf, employers need to take seriously extreme prejudices against some demographic, religious, or political group. Employers need their employees to be safe and harmonious while working together. "I won't work with ______ people," should be the basis for serious discipline or firing. Further, the safety and proper service of customers and patients when working with customer-facing employees is a serious matter, again, the basis for serious discipline or firing.

This is common sense, whether the " ______ people" are some ethnic group - e.g. blacks or whites - or some religion or political POV.

This March, when President Donald Trump said he was cutting off trade with Spain, Three Year Letterman posted, "I literally cannot name one thing that Spain 🇵🇹 does better than America," which garnered around 13,000 replies, most of them naming education as one thing Spain does better than America, because he used the Portuguese flag (on purpose, of course).

On Friday, someone going by Sabrina Messa, a proud Torontonian temporarily in the U.S., tried to get hate clicks by posting a tasteless Charlie Kirk meme and a shot of her sister and friends standing on a U.S. flag. On Saturday, she apologized profusely.
