There are 535 oligarchs in Congress. There is no way in Hades the Secret Service gives its agents a 535-card deck of recognition cards every 2 years. Without actually checking when he was sworn in, at the earliest he became a Senator in 2021, after some 25 years at city and state-level elected positions in California. He may be CA's "Senior Senator", but he's only been in DC some 4 years.

I would not attribute ordinary intelligence to CA's Senators, dating back to Babs Bouncer, but did Padilla not realize that he could have waited for Noem to finish her presentation and ask for questions?

In the real world his charging at Noem and interruption were pre-planned, as were Dem Congress-Critters' immediate howls. It just has not played as well with normal people as Padilla, et al, cluelessly expected.

The spectacle unfolded when Padilla showed up uninvited to Noem's press conference, apparently expecting to grandstand his way into the headlines. He not only disrupted her while she was speaking, but he also wasn't wearing his security pin, and Secret Service agents, not knowing him from a hole in the wall (who did before Thursday?), prevented him from charging toward the dais. He responded by resisting the Secret Service before agents forced him out of the room.

CNN's David Chalian didn't mince words about what really happened here and why Padilla was actually there. "I mean, he's there to spark a moment and create attention. There's no doubt this is a, you know, political tactic that he was employing," Chalian admitted with refreshing honesty, not even pretending this was anything other than manufactured drama.

Also on the panel was Boris Sanchez, who noted that Democrat voters want to see such confrontation and see discussions with Trump officials at the White House as capitulation.

But Chalian's assessment was more realistic: "He clearly showed up to a public event to create a moment and do what you're saying, sort of show his constituents, not just Democrats, but that he's fighting from his perspective."

That made me laugh. I've stopped watching the hearings because the dems make me want to throw things at the TV because of things somewhat like this...

Exactly what was going through my head.  AOC or Jasmine Crockett or one of the other Dem loons asking some ridiculous question and, when an answer is attempted, screaming "YES OR NO! YES OR NO!  ANSWER THE QUESTION THE WAY I WANT YOU TO!  SQUAWK! SQUAWK!  SCREECH! SCREECH! I RECLAIM MY TIME! SQUAWK!  SCREECH!".  Meanwhile the nominee (or whatever) sits there wondering how this crazy person ended up in Congress.  No doubt Padilla had a "gotcha" question and some similar theatrics planned.

As I’ve said before, until these people are arrested and charged to the fullest extend of the law, this stuff will keep happening. By “these people” I mean both the rioters and the elected officials shielding them.

If Bubba Ray Maga with his red Trump hat went and vandalized the local Dem Men-Can-Get-Pregnant organization’s meeting place with the phrase “only individuals who were born female can give birth!”, you guys would definitely go after him to arrest him for vandalism, and since he really did vandalize the place, you’d be within your rights. Now, let’s say that, in order to evade the police, Bubba Ray comes to my house and asks for me to keep his being there a secret from anyone looking for him, and I agree to do so. When the police find out, they are going to arrest Bubba Ray AND, most likely, arrest me too for shielding him even if I don’t know about his vandalism.

If an “evil” rethug can be arrested for shielding a lawbreaker AND if no one really is above the law, then DemonRat Overlords should also be arrested for shielding lawbreakers.

Of course, if you're a lurking DUer that means that you're a brainless minion to the DemonRat Overlords and are perpetually stupid and dishonest so I don't expect you to comprehend any of the above.

But behind the scenes, a number of Democrats worry the incident won’t play well for the party in the long run, especially since the chatter appeared to fall along party lines in the aftermath of Padilla’s removal. 

In interviews Friday, these Democrats didn’t want to speak on the record given that officials in their party are publicly unanimous in backing Padilla.

But these sources say they fear the Padilla incident could have negative ramifications as the party tries to find its way back from their devastating loss in November.

“Here’s the thing: Did it change anyone’s minds or did it just rev up the base?” said one Democratic strategist worried the incident could backfire on their party.

“This is what we don’t understand. We think these moments will cause outrage, but they miss the point. It’s not swaying anyone. It just makes us look petty.”

Padilla's stunt was October-surprise-grade. It was the kind of thing done when the general public and commentariat do not have time to think and reflect before some major action, like voting in an election. There was no such imminent event, so people realize Padilla was doing partisan political theater.

In emotional remarks, Padilla described the encounter that he hoped would serve as a “wake-up call” for Americans – a warning, he said, of how quickly democratic norms can slip away when dissent is silenced and power is unchecked.

“If that is what the administration is willing to do to a United States senator for having the [audacity] to simply ask a question,” Padilla said, “imagine what they’ll do to any American who dares to speak up.”
