Glad our puppers food wasn't on this list. Check it out, hope no one is affected. They said that there was salmonella found in a plant in Pa that produces the food.

Our golden is plagued with allergies, so we will be trying some different foods. As it turns out, there are as many different based foods as there are animals in the animal kingdom. I was surprised to find out there was a kangaroo-based dog food. I can't wait to find out how much that will cost.

We switched our dogs over to "raw" diet after the last pet food fiasco.  They are happy and healthy, and the "litter" they leave in the yard has been reduced to small white (from the bones) piles, even from the Golden Retriever.

I can give you the recipe if you want it.

Ok, here is the recipe.

5 lb package of cheap hamburger, high fat content
12 eggs
1 pint yogurt
2 cups cooked rice or oatmeal
3 tablespoons olive or safflower oil
2-3 cups vegetable and or/ fruit (not grapes or raisens)
1.5 cups dried kelp (can get from http://www.naturesfarmacy.com/store/details.php?prodId=226&category=33)

Mix well, this makes a lot, your dog will get about 3/4 cup up to 40 lbs and an additional 1/4 cup for each 10 lbs over 40.  Put a weeks worth in the fridge, freeze the rest.  Add a chicken leg or thigh (raw) whatever is cheap at the time, with each serving.

When I was on the Canine Epilepsy site, many of the people fed their dogs a raw or home cooked diet to hopefully eliminate the seizures. I was always afraid to do it, as it's tricky getting the proper nutrition for the dogs.

Your diet is interesting, as you have the fatty meat in there. When my first greyhound, Jessie, had bone cancer, I worked closely with a vet from Calgary who was battling cancer in his doberman. He told me to feed Jessie cheap, fatty meat and to eliminate most carbs. He said that the cancer fed on the carbs and didn't on the fats.

It's weird, but his formula was used in a food for dogs with cancer developed by the vet school at the U. of Colorado, Boulder.

Those greyhounds are expensive, too. They don't have their AKC registration, rather are NGA (national greyhound association---designation for racing greys). The folks with the AKC greys look down their nose at the running hounds.

What foods are you using, Schade? I've had really good luck with that Hill's I/D food, both cans and kibble. It's expensive from the vet, but Blue's very skinny and has never had a hearty appetite.

I figured it was cheaper keeping his system healthy and him happy than it was buying all the carpet cleaner for when his tummy was upset.

The spoiled boy has his generic version of Pepcid 10-15 minutes before dinner, then his I/D food. I'm sure it's really bland, but the two females, Xena and Darlene, keep trying to steal it.

I don't even think I would spend $200/month on myself much less a dog.

Just google Skip's Pharmacy in Boca and it should pop up. I've been very pleased with them.

I think it is primarily an airborne allergy. Oh who am I kidding, I don't know what it is, but I always end up with all these medical wonders and incurable chronic ailments....

They aren't open Sundays, but I found the# on Blue's prescription bottle. I'm so glad that I checked, as he's getting pretty low on his meds and I'll have to call them Monday myself for a refill.
