I like the idea of President Biden stepping aside and elevating VP Harris who then can
select a a VP to count the electoral votes on January 6 sparing her a humiliation of announcing her own defeat.

The question is: do these appointments need the Senate approval?

I don’t remember whether Ford and Rockefeller required. But, I suppose, current Senate will, unless Munchin and Sinema decide to be hard assed.

Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress.

Harris selecting someone else to count the electoral votes in her place reminds me a bit of John Podesta announcing on election night 2016 that Clinton would not be appearing that night.
