Kamala Harris is now the presumptive Democratic nominee -- what this means for DU
This year, we did what we always do on Democratic Underground during a presidential election year. While the presidential nomination was still up for grabs, we were in Primary Season. Since Joe Biden had no serious opposition this year and essentially ran unopposed, we called an end to Primary Season on March 6, immediately after Super Tuesday. At that point, we switched to General Election Season.

The difference between the two seasons is subtle but significant. DU's "Don't bash Democratic public figures" rule states, in part, "Do not post anything that could be construed as bashing, trashing, undermining, or depressing turnout for any Democratic general election candidate."

When we are in Primary Season, Democratic candidates for office are not considered "general election candidates" -- they are still fighting to win that honor -- and so DU members have lots of leeway to advocate for their own candidates and criticize their opponents as part of the primary campaign. Once the primaries are over, the winners become "Democratic general election candidates" and as such, receive a lot more protection under the rules. They cannot be bashed, trashed, or undermined once Primary Season is over.

We've done things this way for 20 years on DU because allowing people to continue to oppose Democratic nominees once the primaries are over is counterproductive, provides an obvious entry point for trolls, and is contrary to DU's Core Principles ("...to elect more Democrats and fewer Republicans to all levels of American government" ).

I don't regret sticking to the policy this year. For as long as Joe Biden remained the Democratic nominee, it would not have been right to abandon the policy, and doing so would have set a confusing precedent. For as long as he was in the race, Biden was the Democratic nominee, and he deserved to be protected in the same way that previous nominees had been protected before him. I know some people disagreed with this decision, but I believe it was the right thing to do.

As soon as Joe Biden dropped out of the race, however, we were in unprecedented territory. The logical thing to do seemed to be to return to Primary Season, since the Democratic Party no longer had an official nominee, so that's what we did on Sunday.

48 hours later, Kamala Harris has already secured enough pledged delegates to become the presumptive nominee. Therefore I see no reason at this time to remain in Primary Season. The vast majority of the Party has lined up behind the Vice President, and with enough pledged delegates to secure the nomination, it is now highly unlikely that anyone but Kamala Harris will be declared the official Democratic nominee when all is said and done.

And so, we are now returning to General Election Season with Kamala Harris as our nominee and we're ready to move forward. Thank you all for your patience while we navigated these tricky waters. Hopefully we are now ready to unite and move on to the next goal which is the most important of all -- to defeat Donald Trump this November, take control of Congress, and put MAGA out of business for good.

Thank you for reading!

This is most interesting. I didn't realize that DU had "seasons". So let me get this straight. During this "season" at the "reality based community" that claims to all about democracy and which is populated by people who are members of the party that presents itself as a "big tent" party, if you say something negative about the dem candidate you're apt to get the ban hammer by the gestapo?

As far as I know, the Cave doesn't have anything like that, but it has been a long, long time since I've read the rules here. Since DJT is the official candidate of the Republican Party, I'm going to do a test. I'm going to speak negatively about both DJT and the Rep Party. Let's see how long it lasts.

Sometimes I think that DJT actually talks too much and that he should sometimes bite his tongue and reign in his ego a bit. As for the party, I saw yesterday that some member of the GOP was planning the file Articles of Impeachment against Kamala. At this time, I think that is somewhat stupid. There is indeed a time to treat the dems exactly as they treat repubs, but I just think it's wise to do so right now.

So there you have it. I said something negative about both DJT and the party. Will this post get deleted? Will I get banned? Or is it a fact that the group populated by evil rethugs is really the group that is open to hearing all voices while DU is a dictatorship in which the members have to toe the party line?

IIRC, the DUmp's poohbahs have been posting something similar in every Presidential election year to my memory. In 2020, 2016, 2008, and 2004 there were marching orders to toe the party line from $kimmer, SquirrelG, or that other one E-no-Nads. It caused a lot of rancor by the Bernie bros, and the PUMA's in 2008 Marvin the Martian mad that the clean and articulate black guy got the nomination instead of Cankles.

Flippy, obviously you were being somewhat sarcastic, and you know we don't march in lockstep here and hell, there are a number of things I don't like about President Trump. But his policies clearly outweigh any of his foibles. He was pretty well screwed over upon taking office in 2016 because he didn't have the proper infrastructure and seasoned bureaucrats to make enough of an affect. He will remedy that problem after learning what went wrong in his first administration.

I have to agree with you on that, and yes sometimes he’s a buffoon, but he’s our lovable buffoon who cares about America and its people. He’s intelligent a hard worker and not afraid to stand up to our enemies both foreign and domestic and he’s not beholden to lobbyists and he’s already rich so he doesn’t need to sell out America to make a few million

Wasn't a Trump supporter when he first ran and was never a fan of his bluster. Figured he was doing it for PR and somehow the Republican side coalesced around him. He got my vote in '16, '20, and this year (Lord willing).

Made this comment to some of my golf friends in 2016 that Trump reminded me of Rodney Dangerfield's character of Al Czervik in "Caddyshack".

Judge Smails: You will never be a member of Bushwood!
Al Czervik: A member? You think I actually want to join this scumatorium? The only reason I'm here is because I might buy it!

He pissed off all the right people and it still makes me laugh to see the hourly and daily Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Now you know if you didn't mention the "s" (arcastic) word, the loons wouldn't have ever caught on.

I completely agree about Trump, but I'm not as confident as some that he will win. The demonrats have election shenanigans down to an art form. For Trump to win we've got to have more actual voters than the dems can fake.

At least our side can poke fun at someone and not get mad, we still have our sense of humor. :thatsright:

I'm never confident that Trump is going to win. And as you alluded to, the rat****ing that happened in both 2016 & 2020 might be rearing its rancid head yet again.

I've been pretty certain for a while now that it's going to take something of the magnitude of the 1946 Battle of Athens, TN in some of these "purple" contested areas to keep the Dim'Rats from pulling out all the stops and safeguards in the Dominion Vote Tabulators of Plenty and walking away with another *win like they did in 2020, and tried to do in 2016.

Unfortunately, sometimes the cartridge box must be brought in proximity to the ballot box in order to keep the authoritarians' thumbs off the damned scales.

Yeah, in 2016 he really pissed off the R establishment that cares more about the party and deep state than the country and constituents. They dumped tons of money into FL trying to kill his primary chances but he won anyhow and kept the momentum to win the nomination.

And once he took office he actually worked hard to control the border, something no other Republican politician would ever do.

I'm not a huge fan of his personality but he does have good policies and works hard to deliver on his campaign promises.
