As respected journalist James Fallows noted on twitter, they are specializing in "Trump credulous" stories to set the narrative. It then gets picked up by everyone, being the "paper of record" and all.

I listened all day yesterday for a source for this info. No FEC filing, nothing but cheato's word. And we all know how valid that is.

Yes, I know that some billionaire named Mellon gave him fifty million. Beyond that, no proof of anything.
