I came across some wise words from a departed friend today
My wife and I are constantly trying to clear out old papers and documents and put them where they belong (often in the trash!).

A card remembering a decades-long friend of my family who was once considered an icon of the Washington DC print press had a memorable quote on it:

"We in the press have a special role since there is no other institution in our society that can hold the President accountable. I do believe that our democracy can endure and prevail only if the American people are informed."

True then, true now, true always.
Sounds like an excerpt from the opening scene of "the Newsroom." Or, maybe Aaron Sorkin took his dialogue from this?

There's an old story that Benjamin Franklin was approached after exiting the Constitutional Convention, and he was asked what sort of a government they had created. His response was, "A republic, if you can keep it."

Virtually everyone who learned anything from their middle school/junior high school government class learned that we are a Constitutional Republic, although now I wonder if everyone is actually taught this anymore.

Article IV, Section 4: The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

Now, that doesn't mean "Republican" in the party sense, but in the government sense.

This would all seem to be rather settled understanding, right?

But then there was a crazy segment from CNN where they suggested that MAGA people are peddling conspiracies by saying that our government is a "republic."

It seems the propaganda arm of the Democratic Party known as the mainstream media is so desperate to stop Trump that now they’re fabricating new lies. How he is going to take revenge on his enemies by locking them up and some like Richie Maddow and the fat cows on the view Are worried they will be executed.

If that’s the case, my only question is, will it be televised and what channel will it be on?
