Why would any Presidential candidate praise cannibalism!?
The only reasons that I can think of is insanity, sending a coded message or both.

*rump literally praised Hannibal Lector in a public speech.

That begs the question what kind of message is said candidate sending?

I would wager that if the American People were polled as to which "real life" cannibal (s) first come to mind, the majority would first think of Jeffrey Dahmer, if they were into history the Donner Party, or both.

The major distinction between two being the former; chose cannibalism by choice, and his victims were overwhelmingly black while the latter were forced into it by tragic circumstance, trapped in the mountains during the dead of winter during the 1840s they were starving to death.

I would also wager that if the American People were polled as to which group of people in the world today are most in danger of starving to death, the Palestinian People in Gaza would be near or at the top of the list.

So I believe that's what *rump was/is promoting.

The show I often listen to during my AM commute (Armstrong & Getty) played a partial clip of Trump's comment. They didn't give the context into which it fit, but Trump was grossly-obviously (to anyone willing to acknowledge it) speaking sarcastically. Like I posted above, the MSM are continuously pretzellating and lying about what Trump said and meant.

Video of the whole speech.  I lack time and attention span to find the exact time stamp, but my attempts to find the context match Pete's above.  Trump making a (dumb IMHO) joke, then going to immigration with no segue, which is pretty typical for his stream of consciousness style of talking.  My two bits is he really needs to get away from this type of improv stuff.  It creates fodder for the left just like this.  Trump has given plenty of well written and well delivered speeches, and me thinks returning to more of those would help him a lot more with the independent/undecided/non-political junkie vote that he needs to pull this election off.  A little off the cuff here and there, but more controlled, on point, clear talk. 

But what do I know?

The context of the comment - before and after - is from about 36:10 to 38:10. Trump was speaking about how, mixed in with lots of more ordinary people, some countries have mixed criminals and people from mental institutions into the flood of illegals. Trump used Hannibal Lector, sarcastically, as an illustration of the sort of wonderful people being sent from mental institutions to the US for us to deal with.

This isn't exactly a new theme for Trump, nor a new thing for the MSM to pretzellate and lie about Trump's comments about illegals. Back in 2015 or 2016 Trump was called a racist and anti-immigrant for pointing out the obvious fact that some illegals are violent criminals.

Heard the speech live and in full, although I normally don't listen to his speeches. Was awaiting a baseball game to begin and was going to watch the Fox Weekend Show at 6 pm CT and it was preempted by the speech.

He was not being literal, and that's something the libs always get wrong. He's frequently sarcastic and makes sometimes irrelevant references but others, such as this occasion as mentioned by SV Pete, he was getting around to the mental loons being released upon society.

Trump doesn't speak in nuance, and the left absolutely HATES that.

Trump telegraphs when he is joking or being sarcastic louder that the telegraph at the Disneyland Railroad (loud and continuous). Media people trying to gotchaize a Trump sarcasm know what Trump is doing. They are simply lying, believing that they won't be factchecked and their lies called out.
