Um, the fatality rate for COVID is less than 1%.
Looking at the Cases and Deaths data here,
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/ , contrasting the 2023-2024 holiday season with previous years' I wonder if Covid will even be a disease with a season, like colds and the flu are. There was an obvious (but not horrific) surge during the 2022-2023 holidays, but barely a bump during T'giving 2023 through the beginning of January 2024.
OTOH, the decrease in the deadliness of Covid became statistically noticeable in the 2021-2022 holidays, or even in fall 2021. The number of deaths was terrible (every Covid death was terrible to family and friends, obviously), but in proportion to the number of cases, Covid had become significantly less deadly.
