Pre shift this morning me I’m sitting alone in corner of the break room swilling my who knows how many cups of coffee. And I hear my name called by young manager nice kid he ask me in that scenario what would I do.

I had to ask the kid to repeat the ? Because I’m thinking on if I go ex pat in my retirement to Portugal.

We’ve been several times in visiting Lisbon our niece Elizabeth’s one sister and her husband’s daughter. Liz’s sister lives in Norway and when visiting Portugal Liz sister would fly down her and our brother in law.

And why am I thinking of going ex pat election 2024 I been union freight hauler thirty six years Liz and I planned on retiring at when I’m 62 she would been 60 Boy been graduating college by then.

So I’m in my mind this morning thinking you know I may be ok I’ll have my defined teamster pension Liz defined pension and my SSI or social security spousal death benefits.
And even our private investments Wall Street account that Liz managed with communication with the guy we have had for years who oversees our personal retirement account.

Then my next thoughts were I definitely won’t bail till my son is out college then he can decide if he wants to come. And the big ? is will the airline allow Duncan the golden retriever to fly next to me.

Sorry was rambling because at this moment I’m waiting on set pups 2 trailers to get hooked so I can go to north jersey.

So the safety ? I was asked at pre shift was what steps do you take if you had a brake fire on trailers or tractor so I spoke from actual real life events.

2017 at YRC rear pup the trailer set of two trailers.
The brakes caught on fire left side it was at night saw smoke billowing out in my drivers mirror. I told the group I pulled to the shoulder grabbed my suitcase out tractor screw the Cb radio and antenna teamster rig hooked with channel locks on mirror mount.

So yea I grabbed my suitcase and took these steps in dealing with trailer brake fire. I took big steps to get away from the soon to be inferno and i dialed 911 and waited for the police and fire people to show up.

Young kid manager asked you didn’t try to put out the fire with fire extinguisher in cab of tractor I replied nope.

Not my problem I told him and why would I even try to do that and possibly risk injury to myself and end up dealing with teamster attorney as we fight for workers comp.

Nice kid manager he was quiet after that I headed dispatch to choice a load by seniority.

I kind of miss those old days when union labor and management we were civil yet just barely civil towards each other.

Shit today Union labor and management wanna have a Kumbaya relationship and that’s just so foreign to me well I worked or I have worked at three other union freight outfits that went under.


Back then it was constant war fighting with management especially over at Roadway the grievances would fly you know where you stood.

Over letting the trailers and tractors burn completely that night YRC freight fired me after safety debriefing i told them no I didn’t try fight fire with fire extinguisher.

Like I said I could have ended up fighting with you ****ers over comp and why because you shits cut back on maintenance. And we give back 15% of our wages to help you survive corporate welfare so I own and bought those trailers and tractors over and ****ing over get out my face with your shit logic. The union got me my job back.

Or one time I got delay freight letter from roadway why I pulled over pulled out my pillow from road suitcase took a long nap over steering my eyes were shutting micro sleeping driving don’t wanna kill anybody it’s middle night not always but sometimes you need to.

I got three days off for that one I filed grievance won my pay for those three days

I wrote my grievance up I saw a bright light then little gray aliens I remember being anally probed in which may be workers comp claim. Piss off you manager clowns I’m in charge of that unit when I’m on road.

Tell you I’m still waiting on hooks on the clock over 36 years I’ve worked for

Now I’m trying to finish out my career at buster brown.
