Advertisements [?]How in the world was that even possible?

Just heard it on Maddow's show.

We had to pick our jaws up off the floor.

My friend's Dad was in the One in Europe.

When Maddow said that, I thought my friend was going to faint.

Instead, she just muttered, "I will never set foot in those stores, again".

And she is a tsunami of a shopper.

23. It all started with Rummy allowing all Army to wear a beret.

And the Rangers just sat on the sidelines.
OK, I see why he's a fan favorite. It wasn't the SECDEF who made that call, It was the Secretary of the Army, and the Rangers were LIVID. Several marched from the Second Ranger BN at Fort Lewis WA to Washington D.C. in protest.

This kind of stuff is available everywhere, t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, caps, etc. with names and insignia of all kinds of units. SEALS, Marines, Army Airborne, individual Navy ships, pretty much everything. Some is sold by groups representing vets and active duty folk and some isn't. This isn't something new.

According to the Forbes story:

Quote
Royalties from sales will go to programs for soldiers and their families

Quote
Items that will be for sale include T-shirts, hooded sweat shirts, denim and outerwear, with prices ranging from $11.99 to $119.99.

It wouldn't bother me as long as they're not selling ribbons or copies of the uniform. Then again, I wasn't in the 1stID. :salutenavy:

So, Sears is looking for a new gimmick. No big deal. Apparently they have partnered with the Army to do this. What bugs me more is that Sears REFUSES to give a military discount to active duty, reserves or retired folks. Home Depot & Lowes often does. IMO, Sears is merely using the Army to make themselves "look" better. They had another program this past summer begging folks to donate to vets. Sears would "match" the money donated, but when it was all said and done, they gave NO credit to their customers, grabbing the credit all for themselves.

I earned  my beret and I don't think the Army should have issued them all willy nilly like.

I knew it wasn't Rumsfield but I couldn't remember who it was.  I'll promise you that who ever did it was a liberal.  The ONLY reason that was done at that time was supposedly to 'Raise Moral'.  They GAVE something that a lot of us worked our asses of to earn so the others could feel like they accomplished something they didn't.  It was wrong then and it is still wrong.

I remember how outraged I was at the time and I remember the Rangers being outraged and felt it was all righteous anger.

TiTtyboy was Seal Team 3, but temporarily detached from his river boat/nuclear security assignment in Viet Nam, and sent to join the 1st Infantry Division Rangers for the Normandy invasion. During his time in France, he went under the assumed name Private Ryan. After overwhelming German resistance, he met Tom Hanks behind enemy lines, and received orders to return to Nam. So, it was only temporary, and he does not claim to be a member of the Big Red One. He was, however, the third most decorated soldier in the history of Paramount Pictures.

And it made him even more unpopular with the rest of the Army except with the newbs coming in and that is all he was concerned with. For years the 101st was trying to get a beret of its own in Dark Blue while I was there. It never happened of course but some of us bought one just in case. If anything the Rangers wanted the Black one because that was their color and the rest of the Army should have gotten another color  instead. That above all else is what made the Ranger Bttalions upset and they were right. The Sec Of The Army and al the rest of those that made the choice to change it just to make the newbies in the Army feel better should have really thought a bit more about it.

I never gave a shit one way or the other.  It's the Army, if the CSA makes Bozo wigs the required headgear, that's the uniform and the time for snivelling is past once the order goes out.  Also I'm old enough to remember the Rangers weren't the only ones wearing it originally, the Armored Cav regiments also wore them until the Rangers decided they owned the black berets and cried until they got their way, so I don't have any respect for the Rangers' 'long undisputed history' with it, which wasn't long or undisputed at all.  In most armies of the world, to the extent a black beret goes with any particular branch at all, it means Armor/Cav.

Have to agree here.  When I was in Bindlach, I distinctly remember various CPTs, and LTs of both ranks, complaining about not having the black berets.

The whole Clash/Combat Rock thing really took off after Tim McGovern & Burning sensations had the Top 40 hit "Belly of the Whale" in the early 80's and even Melrose Ave and trendy Beverly Hills shops had Repro Nam Avirex flight Jackets and Camo was all the Rage and Military stuff was top seller at Banana Republic also ! I cant believe  how long it's taken the Military style to catch fire again .... :cheersmate:
