The Unabomber Is Dead

The man known as the ‘Unabomber’ is dead. Ted Kaczynski, 81, was found unresponsive in his cell in North Carolina, having been transferred there for medical treatment (via Fox News):

Kaczynski was found dead around 8 a.m. at a federal prison in North Carolina, a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson told the Associated Press. A cause of death is uncertain.

He had been moved to the federal prison medical facility in North Carolina in December 2021 after spending two decades in a federal Supermax prison in Colorado for a series of bombings that targeted scientists.

Kaczynski was serving life without the possibility of parole following his 1996 arrest at the primitive cabin where he was living in western Montana. He pleaded guilty to setting 16 explosions that killed three people and injured 23 others in various parts of the country between 1978 and 1995. 

Since his conviction, which carried multiple life sentences without parole, he had been an inmate at the ADX Florence ‘Supermax’ detention facility in Colorado. While a brilliant mathematician, Kaczynski suffered from mental health issues, finally resigning himself to a life of isolation in a small, off-the-grid cabin in Lincoln, Montana, and adopting a domestic terrorist agenda that included killing those he felt were part of our technological revolution.

Technological advancement is what Kaczynski felt led to class stratification and environmental decay, which he traces back to the Industrial Revolution. Consequently, Kaczynski started to mail bombs to companies, including Boeing, and individuals he felt were responsible for destroying the earth and society. It was a terror campaign that lasted nearly two decades. It’s the FBI’s most extensive and costly investigation in its history. He was arrested in 1996.

Another ‘supermax’ inmate also died recently, former FBI Agent Robert Hanssen, one of our most notorious traitors who spied for the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation for over 20 years. The damage he caused remains classified, but the bureau has called Hanssen’s activities the worst intelligence disaster in the history of the United States.

This guy was a full-blown nutcase, AFAIC. And this case was the first time I encountered the word "manifesto" when it concerned some nutjob's pontifications about life.

I'm sure Teddy will enjoy eternity in hell.

Ice Cream shop in Seattle's CHOP zone files lawsuit against city (despite not serving cops)

Two other lawsuits were filed this week by businesses in the area. One by  Hugo Properties LLC and the other by Molly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream. The lawsuit by Molly Moon’s is particularly interesting.

In the federal lawsuit filed Wednesday, Molly Moon’s stated its constitutional rights were “overrun” by the city’s decision to “abandon” the 10-block area of Capitol Hill overtaken by protesters. The ice cream maker is accusing the city of materially supporting and encouraging “a hostile occupation of that neighborhood.”

“This lawsuit does not seek to undermine CHOP participants’ message or present a counter message,” the lawsuit, acquired by KIRO Newsradio, read. “Rather, this lawsuit is about the plaintiff’s constitutional and other legal rights, of which were overrun by the City of Seattle’s decision to abandon and close off an entire city neighborhood, leaving it unchecked by the police, unserved by fire and emergency health services, and inaccessible to the public at large, and then materially support and encourage a hostile occupation of that neighborhood. The City’s decision subjected businesses, employees, and residents of that neighborhood to extensive property damage, public safety dangers, and an inability to use and access their properties.”

They got what they demanded, and now they're suing because they got it. I wish WA had judges that would sanction both the ice cream shop and their lawyer for this frivolous lawsuit. What is more likely is Seattle will cave and buy them off.

Indonesia's Anak Krakatau Volcano Spews Ash, Lava in New Eruption

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s Anak Krakatau volcano has erupted, spewing ash as high as 3 kilometers (2 miles) into the air, officials said Saturday.

The volcano island located in Indonesia’s Sunda Strait between the main Java and Sumatra islands has erupted at least seven times since late Friday, Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center said.

It was the longest eruption since the explosive collapse of the mountain caused a deadly tsunami in 2018 along the coasts of Java and Sumatra, the center said. There were no casualties reported in the latest eruption and no evacuation order was issued. The nearest settlement is 16 1/2 kilometers (10 1/2 miles) away.

The Supreme Court limited the reach of the federal Identity Theft Penalty Enhancement Act, unanimously rebuffing the Biden administration’s efforts to prosecute a man already convicted of Medicaid fraud with a separate charge of aggravated identity theft arising out of the same fraud case.

The 9–0 opinion (pdf) in Dubin v. United States (court file 22-10) was issued on June 8 and authored by Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Justice Neil Gorsuch filed a separate concurring opinion.

Hmmmmm ... this decision could have implications for cases where a person was found Not Guilty in state court and then the Feds prosecute for denial of civil rights for the same incident (e.g. the cops in the Rodney King case). Whether or not the Los Angeles County jury's decision was strictly correct (I believe it was, the ugliness of the incident notwithstanding), IMO, GHWB's Justice Department's prosecution of the officers violated the USC's clause forbidding double jeopardy.

Charges were dropped against a self-professing Christian "street preacher" who was arrested while citing the Bible in protest of an LGBTQ Pride event in Reading, Pennsylvania, authorities said.

Damon Atkins was arrested June 6 for "disorderly conduct, engaged in fighting," but the charges were dropped after an official review of video evidence, the Berks County District Attorney's Office said in a press release.

"The charges were withdrawn after the District Attorney’s Office reviewed the videos of the incident along with applicable case law," the statement said.

Berks County Commissioner Christian Leinbach had told the Lancaster Patriot that he believed the arrest of Atkins was "unlawful" and "could open the City of Reading and their police department to legal action."

Damon Atkins was arrested and then charges are dropped after more videos came to light.

Nicola Sturgeon, the former leader of Scotland, was arrested Sunday and is being questioned in connection to an investigation into her party's finances, officials said.

"A 52-year-old woman has today, ​Sunday, 11 June, 2023, been arrested as a suspect in connection with the ongoing investigation into the funding and finances of the Scottish National Party. The woman is in custody and is being questioned by Police Scotland detectives," Scotland police said.

That woman was confirmed by multiple media reports to be former First Minister Sturgeon.

Nicola Sturgeon is under arrest due to political party finance.

The Damon Atkins non-case was probably one or several officers getting him away from the Pride events attendees. Whether deescalation done very wrong or simply malice, Atkins certainly has a case, and the officers behaved stupidly. Hopefully, the on-scene officers' reports don't disappear and Atkins' processing (where the arresting officers' "mistake" could have been recognized and Atkins released rather than held and charged) was taped and preserved.
