Reading and Math Scores Plummeted During Pandemic, New Data Show...

Who could have possibly guessed that shutting down schools for 2 years could possibly have this effect?  :whatever:

1. Hmm. My kiddo was a 4th

Grader 2020-2021. She thrived in distance learning.
That said, many of her peers didn’t and she says she never wants to go back to virtual again.

18. Absolutely give credit my husband too

He is an educator and stayed home with her for that year.
Schools were open here (ND) while she and a minority of students remained virtual. She is still at the top of her classes. I think it comes down to opportunity and parents/guardians with teaching skills who could stay on top of things.

If the pandemic would have hit when I was her age, I would definitely have failed a grade (or two). My mom worked all the time and left alone I never would have even logged in.

Well dang. Its almost like your Daughter had an advantage. But maybe thats just me speculating.

13. Students should have never been promoted if they didn't learn the material

"Algebra got little of his attention, but his teachers kept giving him good grades amid a school-wide push for leniency "

He should have failed and been forced to repeat the grade instead of being promoted along. Now he is going to have to pay $$$ to take remedial classes in college. Someone needs to be held accountable.

Damn right. All you Muppets who rah rah rah'd, along with States that shut down, along with the frick'n Teachers Union who somehow dictated policy all across the country. That would be a good damn start.

By pure happen-stance, just the other day I heard/read a news story that pointed out the obvious. The folks who were all for Covid Shutdowns, generally speaking, had guaranteed pay checks. Imagine that.

This is a form of homeschooling known in California as "tutoring". Like any one-on-one by a person who knows the student very well and loves/cares about the student, students being tutored or taught by a parent tend to do rather well.

6. Ya I know this the hard way

We thought maybe kids were going blind First and second graders

Turns out they didn’t know their letters and could not recognize them on the eye chart. The saddest thing is how ashamed they are when you figure it out and switch to the picture chart

My teacher friends tell me it’s a nightmare, the bright kids who kept learning virtually are now being held back by those who fell behind, and there are far more of them

It’s worse because these are Native American Rez kids, already starting on the dispossession path without COVID
The bolded is child abuse, and any teacher who tolerates this needs to be fired ASAP--but probably won't be, because "equity."

Primarily an issue in schools in the Blue regions of the country.  Civilized areas reopened more quickly and didn't damage their students like the regressive, primitive areas of the country.

Taking this a step farther, families with two resident parents, who are reasonably well established and value education can adjust their lives to do this. Families with only one resident parent, poor economic resources, improvident habits (e.g. par-tay-ers, spendaholics, recreational chemical users), do not value education, and define themselves as powerless victims are unlikely to even try.

With the exception of feeling sorry for the damage done to their children ...

I don't normally indulge in schadenfreude, but for the nasty, miserable, inhabitants of the "Dump" I will relish doing so!  (most-evil-grin)   :-)

How scientific of you. Let's take a case study of one and extrapolate that to the whole population.

Was it all worth it, lurking DUmmies?

Was it worth sacrificing the future of your kids (and that of other children who aren't yours) to get the orange man?

You don't seem to be patting yourselves on the back quite so enthusiastically anymore.

You are welcome. Because it is all about the children.

Some students did thrive in the virtual learning setup, but they were few and far between.  Most kids spaced out, smoked out, copy and pasted, and/or turned in nothing at higher rates than normal school years.

My disciplinary campus saw record numbers last year, for various reasons, most of which can be traced back to students having little to no supervision, structure, or education, academic or social, for that year and a half we were shut down/all online/mixed.  So far this year the social is a little better, but that damage to what these kids didn't learn is clear, and will carry on, because most of them are being passed on at lower skill levels than they usually got passed on with.

We are snowballing faster to the proggies dreams of people just educated enough to push buttons, but not educated enough to ask why they are pushing those buttons and not getting anything for it.

N+1 Grade Reading, English, Math, Science and Social Studies build on Grade N's learning. If Grade N material wasn't learnt, the student will be lost in Grade N+1, after the problem will snowball every year if the school does social promotion. This has been true and has been seen, tragically, for several decades. The Covid shutdowns made this failure worse by spreading it.
