my abortion-

I was 18, mr pete was 21. We were poor but we were young and poverty was a choice for us. We did not want to ask our parents for money. We were free and life was easy.

We went from living in a tent to renting spaces which were always "adequate". We even got government help - free butter, powdered eggs and milk.

We were barely taking care of ourselves and I got pregnant. I remember mr pete's father telling him: "she's going to get pregnant and keep you from finishing college".

We lived in California and abortion was legal. It was a difficult path. I cried alot. I even thought I might go to hell.

That was over 50 years ago. We made the decision - the 2 of us. We didn't seek anyone's advice.

We both finished college, bought a house, put away some savings and had 2 beautiful children and 4 grandchilden.

When I look back, it is easy to see that we made the right choice.

It was the right thing for us to do at the time and it made a multitude of difference in our lives.

p.s. immediately after the abortion - we began seriously using birth control until we were in a place to start a family.

1. My niece, mid 20's.

A man cut the condom to try and enslave her to him for a good 20 yrs.

Later learned how violent and disturbed he was. Concerned about health and safety of her other 2 children with this man always in her life. 9 weeks. Too late for the pill per Texas, I think it was 8 weeks. Having to do it hidden from this man, Texas had a two-day waiting and hours from where she lived. Colorado had something in the way so had to drive to New Mexico. Was met with a couple men my age shaming the young women going into clinic. Had to have an escort.

But hey, shame the woman.

3. My girlfriend's

Similar story. Both in college, a broken condom led to it, it was 100% her choice and I backed it.

Went with her for it, paid for it, was the right decision for both of us. We didn't love each other, we broke up shortly after, but remained friends, I even introduced her to her husband. Again, this was her control over her own body and when to choose to have a child or not. Our lives would have been forever changed and instead we chose to finish college and start lives on our terms with people we loved. She is married for 20 years with 2 beautiful kids now. I am married and love my life and have been successful in it. This is what they want to take away.

And these stories are worth fighting for too.

I feel we concede too much ground to the Right on abortion narratives by letting the Right dictate the terms of the debate to extremes. Of course rape and incest survivors would never have to worry about their choice being taken away from them, but neither should any woman. I'm not going to cede that ground to Cons, this is an absolute freedom, the most fundamental of freedoms enshrined in our Constitution, it's body autonomy and the right to self determination. When women aren't free to control their own bodies, we aren't a free country.

16. This

Because of Roe women had had 50 years of gains, they've joined the workplace like wouldn't have been possible, they're graduating from college at record rates, they're becoming leaders, running companies, and holding elected offices.

Women now sit on the Supreme Court and in the office of the Vice Presidency. WHat's worse to the Right Wing White Wing Republican men is that Black women absolutely can tell them what to do.

In fifty years, women excelled--more women graduate form college, and more women are rising to the top, breaking through the glass ceiling. Alito and the Religious Right do.not.view.women.as.equal. In their eyes, women should be at home, or, if they have to work, they need to be social workers, nurses, teachers, or secretaries. They long for the MadMen days.

Women have terminated pregnancies ever since the first woman discovered she was pregnant and did not want to be. Discovering you are pregnant when you don't want to be is terrifying. Running through every single person you know and dismissing them because you can't tell them shows you what alone is.

I was not in love with Paul, and I got birth control before I ever had sex with him. I liked him a lot, he'd asked me out in high school but I wasn't old enough to date. Five years later, when I was 20 and a junior in college and he was 24, I told him I was pregnant, I told him I was not having this baby now, and he agreed, and paid, and we moved forward. We dated for another year, but I lived in the Bay Area, and he was still in Los Angeles. I finished college, went on to get a masters in history and teaching credentials.

WHen I was 24, I suffered a heart attack from spontaneous coronary artery dissection. Rare, and "typically fatal in labor and delivery." Turns out, having that abortion probably saved my life. I suffered one miscarriage with my husband when we tried to get pregnant. Turns out, not all women are "earthen vessels," some of us aren't meant to have children, but we are the greatest aunts in the world.

Three people knew I had an abortion. My mother, my best friend, and Paul. Hell, my mother knew I was pregnant simply because I threw up for three straight mornings. "I hope you really are sick", she said, 'And you're not pregnant." I follwed her into her room, and told her the truth, and we cried together, and she supported my decision.

Fun fact: I am an adopted person. Never once did I consider carrying to term and surrendering. No.

The Right wants to build a supply of white infants to give to older, richer, infertile couples, too, since it's harder and more expensive to import foreign infants. They leave actual children to flounder around in the foster care system (I do guardian ad litem work) so their concern for the children is wafer thin.

For the record, because Barrett thought women could just adopt out.

Adoption is not the opposite of abortion. Raising your own child is.
Abortion is not the opposite of adoption. Raising your own child is.

Adoption is a permanent solution to a temporary crisis.

It's about control and punishing women for enjoying sex.

9. I also had one. I was in my thirties, divorced and struggling.

My birth control failed. My life would have been changed for the worse if choice wasn't legal, and the life of any child I might have had would have been equally affected for the worse. I never had a decent paying job in all of my working years. I don't talk about it because it really is no one else's business. As someone commented up thread, reproductive justice allows a woman to do all the things a man can do, without question. The Talibornagains don't think that women are really human.

22. I have an autoimmune disease.

After birth control failed, I needed an abortion to survive. I have not regretted it.

25% of the women in this country have had an abortion, most don't worry about it.

Outlawing abortion won't end abortion, it ends safe abortions.

21. I was before Roe

18. The first time I had sex I got pregnant.

Back then if you knew the right people, you could find a doctor to do it on the down low. I was in denial and didn’t act quickly enough for that option. A doctor told me the only place in the world I could get an abortion was Japan, so that’s where I went. Alone at 18. When I got off the plane I had no idea where I could go for the procedure.

Literally, an ad in an English language newspaper led me to a clinic where the doctor had gone to med school at Johns Hopkins. I stayed there a few days and flew home.

I’ve always dwelled on how hard that was. Now I realize how privileged I am to have had that option.

you flew to Japan to have an abortion?

26. Many years ago

my then boyfriend went behind my back and told his mother that I was considering all of my options regarding a surprise pregnancy. She took it upon herself to call my mother who lived thousands of miles away and was suffering with dementia.

I guess boyfriend's mom thought she could control me into making the choice she wanted which was to give birth. It didn't matter that I was well past the age of being able to drive, vote, get married and divorced and drink. My privacy and health care decisions were up for debate as far as she was concerned. In addition to the stress of a surprise pregnancy the person closest to me had betrayed me in a huge way.

Coincidentally I had been thinking about this situation only hours before the draft decision was leaked. Also I never tattled on her son to her about his coke and gambling problem. Maybe she figured that one out for herself or that was acceptable to her. I don't know. But I knew my relationship with them was over.

1.)Free government handouts but went to college for a gender studies degree I suppose.

2.)You will end up in Hell guaranteed.

3.)  You had 3 beautiful children but put one down like  a dog because it interfered with your night life.

4.)A baby paid the ultimate price for your negligence.

Condoms, the pill, the shot, the morning after pill, implants, etc. There is NO reason for an abortion other than saving the life of the mother. ....ya f'n ghouls. Y'all just want to keep the ability to kill babies.

Man, just look up there.  How many of them, and more, amounted to, "I had to get this abortion, the baby daddy was a piece of crap!"  The only response is, "You spread your legs for a piece of crap?"

We desperately need to go back to the old way of handling romantic matters.

I like to tell people that when it comes to abortion I am pro-choice as long as the choice is made a little higher up the decision tree.

It might already have been archived here, but at one point the DUmmies had a massive thread on how proud they were of their or family members/acquaintance members abortions. Perhaps someone has the time to look through and find it, nauseating as it might be.

Remind me ... who appointed the first woman USSC Justice. ... who appointed the first black woman to serve as US Secretary of State?

This corner of the "Religious Right" has had a woman for my primary care physician for 40 years. This corner of the "Religious Right" voted for Sarah Palin to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency and viewed her as FAR better than McCain. Just off the top of my under-caffeinated head.
