I wonder why this wasn't an issue when Trump was president.  Interesting.  Be sure to thank Biden for giving you this opportunity to expand your horizons!

I don't want to be chained to a cell phone

I've been applying for part-time work recently to cover the rising cost of living. Seems like everything is dependent on being connected 24/7 to a cellphone.

I've never developed the cellphone habit. It's just a phone, not my life. But I love the internet on a desktop.

Is it possible to work today without being tethered 24/7 to a cellphone? For some reason, I find it intolerable.

Is it just me?

3. That would depend on the type of job

Modern cellphones are portable computers basically. They can be used to simplify your life as well as complicate it depending on what you do with them. It is very convenient to have if you are on the move and need to access things you would normally do from your desktop. For example, you can open word documents or spreadsheets on your cellphone. So, you are traveling and somebody sends you a document, you can open it and look at it from your phone, same for emails. etc...

5. That said, be wary of any job that wants to tether you to anything work 24/7

Doctors and other medical specialists and emergency responders may need to be on call 24/7 but after that, you need to ask if that is what you want to be part of.

9. I quit a job after one day due to cellphone dependency

To get the job, I had to use at least three apps.

Then, to do the work, I needed one app for payroll, another app for communicating to the supervisor, and two more apps to actually do the work.

Suddenly, my phone was pinging like a pinball machine, demanding that I complete this training, respond to a question, send something, do something. This was before even doing a work task.

It was a full time job just to stare into the little screen, and respond to every demand.

I am not good at navigating all the competing apps, back and forth quickly. Plus, I don't thumb type.

I fear I am doomed.

What a loser.

4. It would be very difficult.

I work for a company whose district managers are all about 24 years old and just out of college. They forced us to download ****ing Whatsapp because that's the only way they send out mass communications to store managers. Whatsapp is the sketchy shit trump people used because their messages can't be traced. I'm pissed about it.

I've been thinking of switching back to old school flip phones because my smart phone is beginning to annoy me, but I'd have to find another job.

But to answer your question, being tethered to a phone is annoying to me as well.

10. I have a work issued cell phone

And I have my personal cell phone.

The ringer for my work issued phone is on during my work hours. I mute it when I end my work day.

If my employer wants me to answer it after my work hours, then they have to pay me for the time. I belong to a union. There was a time when the big boss was thinking about having us peons cover an emergency phone on the weekends. That was quickly dismissed as an idea as they’d be paying us 24 hours a day for the days we’d be responsible for that phone. Would’ve been a good paycheck enhancer.

Enjoy.

What the bleep is this blather about? I doubt that M or St or GackoBell give a bleep whether PT employees have a cell phone. As for tech support, well, whether you have an office or your home is your office, customers need to be able to contact you in a timely and reliable way. Jobs have necessary requirements, and people choose both together.

I can't see ANY company that's worth working for requiring someone to download WhatsApp.  Seriously?!

What dutch777 meant was:

That said, be wary of any job that wants you to work.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

If they learn to code then they will find out what it is really like to be tethered to a cell phone

I would suggest to these people that Burger King and Wendy's usually need help. No cell phone is required as long as they show up for work on time.

My wife works for a healthcare provider whose nurses and aids visit patients' homes. My wife uses more programs and apps than I do, and so do those nurses and aids. Welcome to the real world, jmbar2.

I suspect that jmbar2 dislikes the accountability having to use those few app builds into the jobs (s)he wants.

Those Nigerian Treasury Ministers don't have enough hours in the day to write their own proposition emails, so they farm it out to DUmmies...

(Come to think of it, that might explain why the spelling and grammar in those emails is so, "entertaining"...)

How does this DUmmy expect to gain access to secure business and DOD websites that require 2 factor credentials such as DUO Mobil or Microsoft Authenticator without a cell phone?

I bet you don't mind the sketchy shit that twitter employees use ("Signal" which is encrypted) for the same reasons of security..

Whatsapp's messaging has been around since August 2009, and its been owned by FB since 2014. I could check a calendar, but I'm pretty sure both dates were well before Trump's Presidency. Like most tools, Whatsapp is as "sketchy" or benign as the people using it.
