seriously, if they split CA up, the northern half of the state would be a wonderful place to live.

CA's problem areas are mostly a few coastal areas - my home Silicon Valley being in one such - and the Sacramento-Davis area (gooberment types and a UC; but not so much Woodland or Dixon). Those are also some of CA's most populous areas.

I have to admit I'm not an expert on the lay of the land out there.
I traveled there extensively through the 90's and 2000's and noted that the folks in the Northern half were not much different at all than those where I come from ideologically. But when I was in the lower part of the state, Livermore, SF, LA, Tustin...  it was left-wing nut territory. I didn't get out much though, mostly work and a little beach time when I could fit in an hour or two.
Seems like it's the typical urban v/s rural situation, only that Southern CA is almost all urban and that ruins it completely.

San Diego County is pretty mixed as well. Lots of retired Navy and Marines. On my son's street a lot of vehicles have "Marines" and/or "NRA" stickers.

Not so true but what is true, if you broke off Kalifornia at the 101 freeway (well 15 miles to the east) to the Pacific Ocean you would have a decent divide into communist country and a democratic one. Full disclosure I live within 1/4 mile of the Pacific

     Make that I-5 and you have an even stronger argument, but it depends on how red you want the red to be. Ironically, the more coastal land you flitch off, the more honkies you eliminate.

  Howzabout the area south of the north shore of San Pablo Bay, west of I-680 in the Bay Area, west of US101 until you are over the Grapevine, and then along I-210 and then south along I-15 into San Diego. Sacramento and Davis are still outside of that area, though. I think Sonoma, Mendocino, and Humboldt Counties are more purple than blue.
