fightforfreedom (499 posts)https://www.democraticunderground.com/100216372195Do you know what separates Russian troops and the city of Kiev?Chernobyl, Miles of radioactive land. One of the most dangerous places on earth.By the way, if you have never seen the HBO series Chernobyl, watch it, it was outstanding. It gave me chills.

It's been a tourist destination for years now.Which is not to say that there's no danger, but I think that troops could pass through and avoid the really dangerous areas.Somehow, I doubt Putin would have any qualms about sending troops through the outer exclusion zone.I second your reccomendation for the HBO series.https://www.highheelsandabackpack.com/visiting-chernobyl-is-it-safe-to-travel-Visiting Chernobyl: Is it safe to travel to Chernobyl? (2022 Guide)

DetroitLegalBeagle (993 posts) 12. There is a hotel within the Exclusion Zone that serves tourists. Its about 10 miles down the road from Pripryat and the containment building. They stay there for multiday trips. If I remember right there are still around 10,000 people who live within the area, mainly workers at the plant itself. The power plant's remaining reactors are being decommissioned. The plant had 3 other reactors and those were still being used till 2000.
FBaggins (23,946 posts) 9. No It doesn'tIt separates Belarus from Kiev perhaps... but not Russia.Nor is it "one of the most dangerous places on earth". By most standards, you wouldn't want to pitch a tent and live there permanently... but it's not at all dangerous to drive through (even ignoring the fact that Russian forces can plan for NBC warfare).
They keep reminding us that they're the self-declared smartest folks on the internet.
Well, there's yet another DU observation that didn't age well. Not only because the invasion is in fact taking place, but there are rumors of fighting in the vicinity of Chernobyl. Showing once again that DU knows less than nothing.
Fighting is over in Chernobyl and the Russians now occupy the power plant.Video revealed Russian tanks and armoured vehicles standing in front of the destroyed reactor, which sits just 60 miles north of the capital Kiev. "
