By announcing that Putin is going to invade, President Biden has erased any tactical surprise from Putin's plans.

Putin has been saying that he wants peace, blah, blah, blah. He's been "negotiating" in bad faith but he's trying to make it look like he's open to diplomacy.

By calling Putin's bluff, President Biden has made it clear that if Russian forces invade the Ukraine, Putin will be exposed as a liar. This puts tremendous pressure on Putin to rethink his war plans because he'll be ostracized by most of the rest of the world if he goes ahead and invades.

I think that's the idea since the U.S. is not going to send troops to defend the Ukraine.

So... telling Russia we know they are going to invade AND telling him we're not sending in troops wins because???

Putin does need international fealty in order to do business. If he can’t sell his stuff, mostly fuels, then he’s lost his leverage.

But as I wrote, I expect the worst.

IF Europe says no to Russia fuel... and electricity... who is going to supply it?

He has a very strong hand. He has been able to array his forces exactly as he wishes.. He can choose the exact time and place to initiate hostilities. He has 3 separate avenues of approach that forces Ukraine to spread their defenses. Most importantly he knows NATO will not interfere militarily.

There is a lot to favor the Russians initially

I’ll admit that I’ve never read The Art of War and am not one of the experienced generals who helped Biden clusterf**k the Afghanistan withdrawal but I’m pretty sure that when Putin openly puts 200K troops on the Ukraine border that his military strategy is not based on “tactical surprise.”

When has war Russian style put great emphasis on surprise? War Russian style is largely a mix of overwhelming force and grinding down the opponent, with intimidation beforehand. If Russia tries to bite of part or all of Ukraine, that will be Putin's strategy.
