For this to have happened, one of 2 things are necessary:

He belligerently confronted a redneck sitting in his truck but was not shot, or he knew whose truck it was upon entering the store but the owner didn't do anything about someone starting shit with his customers, and since they know each other the rest of the community isn't going to say anything about his behavior.
