Why would anyone waste time there?

I am proud to say I have never spent more than 30 seconds (to look at a friend's page) there.

It was all right a while back, but it is a waste of time now.  Too much BS, mostly.

I've never even clicked on a myspace link or typed the URL or googled it. Same for facebook and livejournal and wherever else the little whippersnappers hang out. :-)

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Anyone who has a page on any of those thingies should have their heads examined.  They don't seem to know the Internet is forever.  Much less about cyber-stalking.

But welcome, Shamrock.

Free, free, free...why do you do this? tsk tsk Free needs a spanky! :-)

It's all what and how you use it. It's been a useful networking tool for my friends and family. Of course, being that I use it in that way, I keep mine private. Now chat...I'll give you that. I have limited use for chats like messenger anymore. I'd rather talk on the phone then type everything I want to say to someone.

Along with digital cameras, phones, text messages, email, etc.....at least when I was young, if you wrote horrible things, you could burn the paper it was on and no one would be the wiser. Unless you shared it with another person.

Does anything that you don't care for or use get judged so harshly free? My mother is like that. She uses the most negative terms for things she doesn't like and never has enough tact or consideration that the person next to her might actually like that. Example: I could like scambled eggs and she'll not say, "I really don't care for them" or "I'd rather have egg beaters." No instead she'll say Scrambled eggs are naaaasty in the crappiest of tones and proceed to ask you how you could possibly enjoy something so disgusting. For some reason you 'head examined' comment rubbed me in the same with with its negativity. We get it, you don't like it. Commenting on the mental health of people who do is beyond just your own personal considerations and has earned you a bitchslap I fully expect you to return.

free, did you ever consider other people have a priority to other things above anonymity? I have to wonder why be on the internet at all if you are this paranoid? I'm sure a really smart IT guy could find out whatever he wanted about you if he was interested.

As for privacy, I intended to post a link to sponsor me in a walkathon for autism on this site. Some things are just more important then whether you have an idea of what part of Ohio I live in. :whatever:

Glad to see you back, Shamrock!  :cheersmate:

I used to have a Facebook page, back when it was exclusive to college students with official college e-mail addresses.  I let it go after I left Georgia Southern.  I kept getting contacted for friend requests by people I never wanted to hear from again (from my MIDDLE-SCHOOL days).

Umm, what exactly do you all think happens on a myspace page that one would care. Printing pictures of the leaves in fall and sending a message to my friends asking how life is is hardly something I feel I need to burn.  :lmao: Now if I posted naked pictures of myself or something, I can see your point, but I hardly think the net cares that I like the Jet song Cold Hard Bitch or that I have a fall themed page :lmao:

Dixie, I thought you were a young whippersnapper :bawl: Free is beyond hope  but you :hammer: :-)

JK...I've never had a problem with unsolicited friend requests on the privacy mode. It's one of the reasons I keep it on. I know you weren't talking about unknowns, just I know some peeps get them who have their page open for public view. I'm like, nope sorry. In fact I don't know that I have one person who I know from the net only at this point.

My mom's on there and she's older then free...barely :uhsure: :-)

I had a very ugly middle-school experience, hence why I cut off contact with all of the folks I knew in Louisiana.  I sound bitter, I know, but I'm much happier not having them around anymore.

My sister has her own Myspace page and its set to private. She learned things the hard way when she first started out having it set for public viewing.  A former family member contacted her via private message.  (one we all despise, because of what she and her sister (stepsisters to my sis and I) did to us after my first stepdad died.  Tried to bankrupt our mom by taking all of our stepdad's retirement savings (as there was no will, unfortunately), plus trying to take our house and have us evicted from it).  She started cussing at my sister via private messages, stating that she wasn't done with us, even after 7 years of little or no contact.   MySpace banned the stepsister from using the site again, and we haven't heard from them since.

The internet (and technology in general) have made what I call "brain vomit" commonplace. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure your fall leaves are lovely.  :-*

I'm no Luddite. Not by any stretch of the imagination. I think it's great that some people use the internet for a creative outlet or communication. But it's too easy. No one thinks twice of blogging or posting about every.single.thought that enters their mind. It's like reading over the shoulder of a 16 year old girl who is furiously scribbling in her diary in gym class. Some things just don't need to be said aloud or posted in cyberspace. I don't care how "private" your settings are. It's out there. I may not darken the doors of social networking sites, but I've certainly seen the fallout that occurs when people put seemingly innocent thoughts/photos/etc...on display only to have it backfire down the road.

I'm not paranoid. I share photos and things with friends and family like I have with you guys here. Besides, doesn't the fact that I basically have taken up residence here prove I'm a "whippersnapper" who loves the internet?  :lmao:

I'm just repelled at how much the younger generation takes it for granted. I can remember a time when people didn't have instant access to technology and you had to actually stop and think about what you were going to say (or post in today's language). About the worst you could do was scream at someone over the phone or on their answering machine. Now? You can upload your innermost thoughts in a nanosecond. Not always a good thing.

Sorry, I'm ranting. We're talking about this in our home and family right now and trying to instill these "stop and think" lessons into our child so we don't face drama later.

Like being not accepted at college or losing/not getting a job -- FOREVER.

And everyone here knows I disagree with the posting of pics of onesself (at least identifiable ones) for the same reason.

If someone were to take all my posts for the last years on the few boards I have been on they would probably be able to determine my approximate age, stature, job category (not even the specifics of that), College attended and marital status and some favorite vacation spots.  There the trail would end.

I keep as small a footprint as possible.  I google and yahoo search myself regularly and then either get data on myselef deleted (it can be done) or I have it replaced with misleading information.

Kids today don't appreciate how powerful personal information is, how it never expires, and how it can be used to hurt you or your family.  If not now, then at any time for the REST OF YOUR LIFE.
