Even at the peak of the current surge, August 31, that day's new cases number was 1/3 of the second word day in the winter surge, January 8. Further, the worst day's deaths, September 15, was ~3/10 of the worst winter surge day, January 21. So both in numbers of cases and in deaths, the current surge's worst days were a third or less than what California hospitals managed in January 2021. And the peak of the current surge was 4-6 weeks ago.
