Mayor: 'Get out of New Orleans now'

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/weather/08/30/gustav.prepare...

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city

beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday but urged residents to flee now.

"You need to be scared," Nagin said. "You need to be concerned,

and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans right now."

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) --

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation of the city beginning 8 a.m. Sunday
but urged residents to consider escaping "the mother of all storms" before then.

New Orleans residents leave Friday via Interstate 10 westbound ahead of Hurricane Gustav.

"You need to be scared," Nagin said of the Category 4 hurricane tearing along Cuba's western coast.
"You need to be concerned, and you need to get your butts moving out of New Orleans right now.

This is the storm of the century."

The city's west bank is to evacuate at 8 a.m.

Mandatory evacuations to begin Sunday morning in New Orleans

* Story Highlights

* NEW: Mandatory evacuations set to begin 8 a.m. Sunday in New Orleans

* Hurricane watch issued from southeastern Texas to Alabama-Florida border

* Thousands evacuating Gulf Coast on buses, trains, planes

* Gustav's sustained winds reach 150 mph as it roars past Cuba

"This storm is so powerful and growing more powerful every day," Nagin said.

"I'm not sure we've seen anything like this."

Not enough OMG the sky is falling?  How about this:

Katrina had a footprint of about 400 miles, he said. Gustav is about 900 miles and growing, Nagin said.

"This is worse than a Betsy, worse than a Katrina," he said.

The mayor speculated that Gustav is so fierce Baton Rouge likely will experience 100 mph winds.

This is so disheartening. NOLA is going to get pounded again.

18. He's NOT implying.. this IS worse than Katrina!!

Of course, we need to make it political (without actually involving the Democratic Party):

26. That was my point in an earlier post...
A reporter on CNN said that because NO had such an extensive, organized evacuation program
this time, there would not be large shelters inside NO to accompany people.

So, if people do not leave--they will have nowhere to go. No Convention Center, like last time.

I thought it was kind of presumptuous to assume that EVERYONE would leave.

Many people can't afford the gas to get out--let alone food, water, money for hotel, etc! People would have to drive
at least a couple hundred miles North to get out of imminent danger wouldn't they? That's at least $50 in gas. Sorry, but
not everyone may have that right now.

Many elderly people just might not want to go. I imagine some may wait until the last minute, and might not be able to get
gas and supplies.

Maybe I'm being an alarmist, but when I heard that no large shelters would be open for people inside of
NOLA, my heart kinda sank. Maybe, after the storm--those areas could be set up, if they are indeed needed.

32. Well, that is George Bush's America
The poorest and most vulnerable always get left behind.

Umm, New Orleans had an extensive, organized evacuation plan before Katrina.  And G. Bush wasn't responsible for activating it.  Some guy named Nagin was in charge.

So, now Nagin is going to do something with a storm bearing down on him.  Will anyone tell him that Katrina and Gustav are nowhere near equivalent in terms of size or power?  That there is still a lot of variables left in Gustav?  No, let him get hysterical on the TV and the Dem's will think he did all he could.  Damn, these people are stupid.

Gustav "the storm of the century"? LOLOLOL. Nagin's trying to make up for last time, when he was completely nonchalant about the danger of Katrina. I remember seeing him on television with his "posse" all behind him, acting like he was just too cool to get all worried about a little hurricane.  He was acting like "I'm from N'Awlins, we ain't worried about no little hurricane". And so there the busses sat, covered with water. What a doofus he is.

Can anyone with an account find the threads from pre-Katrina landfall?

I specifically remember the warnings coming out and DU being in a lather. One particularly excitable poster squeaked, "This is deliberate!" and the damn storm was still out to sea.

Not only does it show their unhingedness it also goes to show the only ones not paying attention were Nagin and Landreau.
According to the Bible, "know" means "yes."

I'm reading the NHC forecast discussion, and I think Nagin needs to shut the **** up.  This storm is not the "Perfect Storm".  It is not the storm of the century.  It is a very ragid storm thats going to be undergoing shear as it approaches land.  And it is just barely Category 4.

Evacuating New Orleans is probably a good idea.  I don't know how well the repairs are going after Katrina, but it may not be able to hold up, so no sense at putting the people at risk.  But this righteous speech of his is so full of shit it makes me sick.

For a solution to this threat, we should turn to the wisdom of the DUmmies:

Any damage done by this hurricane will clearly be the fault of Chimpy McBushco and the BFEE. If he had required the U.S. government to buy enough carbon credits from Al Gore, there would be no hurricane. The reality-based community has known this for a long time. In fact, it may not be too late. The *resident could call Congress into emergency session this afternoon, and get an emergency appropriation. Treasury could cut a check, and Air Force One could deliver it directly to Algore before sundown. He's on his new houseboat at Center Hill Lake this weekend. At this late date, it may be impossible for Al to stop  the hurricane, but with enough carbon offsets it could probably be reduced to a tropical storm. A lot of damage could be prevented. Algore stands ready to help immediately. He has pledged to not put a hold on the government check. Will Bushitler take this life-saving step? Not a chance.

I just saw this but immediately though of the old SNL skirt with garret Morris, "News for the Hard of Hearing."
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
