My son plays youth (middle school) football.   He had to lose a few pounds to play the position he wanted to play.   Last night was the weigh in and he was fabulously successful.  He lost about 13 lbs in about 2 and 1/2 weeks.  Not only can he play the position he wanted, but he can play any position, and he doesn't have to do the second weigh in, because he was 5 lbs under the necessary weight.   I didn't particularly care for him losing that amount of weight that quickly, but he got it done and he doesn't have to think about it anymore.

So dh decided that we should take him to Jerome Bettis' (former Pittsburgh Steeler) Grill downtown.   They serve ridiculously large portions of ridiculously high calorie food.

Well we get there and learn that Bettis is broadcasting a live ESPN radio program from the restaurant.   Not only that but he just happens to arrive at the same time we did.  He is a very nice guy and it was very cool.

What a reward he(and you) weren't expecting! Awesome.  :cheersmate:

As for the weight, men(and boys) tend to drop weight a lot quicker then females. Just so from here on out he's going to work on eliminating body fat for muscle and getting enough calories to support that he should be fine.

That was a great day!  :cheersmate:

God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.

ain't that the truth, what I wouldn't give for the metabolism of a 14yo boy.   All he did was cut out bread and bread like stuff, all bakery things, cookies, crackers, cereal, pasta all refined carbs.   He still ate all kinds of fruits and vegetables.   He also ate fish, chicken, eggs and even hot dogs without buns.

He also had a two hour practice, 5 days a week.  The pounds just fell off.

I didn't know that these dudes had weighins for football. My co-worker was telling me her 10 year old was trying to drop weight and I just about dropped my jaw....  :o

Anyway... glad he achieved his goal and he did it in a healthy fashion!

It's done to protect the smaller players.   There was a story in the paper about a kid who ended up in the hospital for quite a while, he was 88 lbs and was tackled by 256lb opponent.   In my view neither of those kids should be playing.

Rob's league has maximum weights but no minimums.  It's a real problem for the bigger kids.  There is a boy on Rob's team who has played with the team since 4th grade.   This year should be his last year with them.   He can't play because he's over 6' and weighs 195lbs.   There is no way he could get down under 170.   Rob's league is under 170 for linemen, under 140 for inside linebackers and under 134 for pretty much everyone else.

I read about one league that weighed everyone at registration and then tried to set the weights (minimums and maximums) based on policy that would eliminate the fewest kids and still keep everyone safe.

He's 5'6 and weighed in at 127lbs.    135lb - 140 is more normal for him, though.

Cool pics!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle
