My husband and I are white-but we face racism a lot. He has albino traits

Both of his parents are white-the recessive trait is not known in any family so we do not know why are where but it is there.

He has very white pigmentation, even his body hair is white. His eyes are beautiful blue but he is legally blind.


People look at him weird and make comments. We were married for 2 years before we had our child but even his side of the family said maybe we should adopt because god forbid we have a child with his issues. This was 32 years ago

People look at us funny. When I was pregnant, someone at a buffet we were eating at actually came to our table to ask if we were worried that the baby would have his hair. I said I hoped so.

For the record, she looks a lot like him in structure but she doesn't lack pigmentation.



Even though both of us are white, he and I get comments and looks all the time.

The color of someone's skin does not indicate what is inside their heart, mind and body.

I love my husband and wouldn't change a thing but we get crap all the time.


I am not crying. Just pointing out that it exists for a lot of people. My younger sister's husband didn't even come to our wedding because I married an albie.

But it's not racism. Albinism isn't a race or ethnicity.

I don't mean to compare your experiences with anything else, because various forms of prejudice and hate don't compare with each other. Nor do I want to minimize the cruelty you've had to endure. It just isn't racism any more than misogyny is racism.

when I first started dating him several in my family were like-are you sure?

but my mom adored him.

My dad just asked if he was good to me. I said very.

that was all they needed.

 

I wondered why this came up- as far as I know- DUmpmonkietenjeep has never talked about her Albino Blind Hubby before...

then I remembers that Markel was dissing the Queen about race...

Albinism is very uncommon or rare. People who have never seen or heard of it will react, perhaps curiously, perhaps concern ... and, of course, there are bullies. All this is ordinary human behavior, not some sort of "ism".

Back when I was just a young-un circa 1980 I lived in Burlington, VT.  The largest city in VT population around 38K.  Anyways we were close enough to Montreal that sometimes bands that played in Montreal stopped there after and played at a local bar for what I suspect was probably just drinks.  The bar would charge a very reasonable cover of about $5.00.  One night I was in there and it was Johnny Winter (would've rather it'd been his brother Edgar) sitting on a bar stool on the dance floor.  I'm sitting like 10 ft away.  The long white hair, the ghostly skin and the red eyes.  Yeah you kinda take a second look, but I gotta say even a redneck racist like me would never call him an "Albie"

Okay. I'm getting old so my memory isn't what it used to be. I could be completely off about all of this. Wasn't Cruise Ship Pam the one who was wanting to dance the fandango with a pool boy or bartender or something on a cruise ship because he paid her attention? Other than her husband's name being "Mark" (I believe) I don't think in all the years of Pam's "look at meing" that she's mentioned much about him. Especially anything about him being even remotely albino.
