RandySF (36,122 posts)When was the last time we heard something like this from the State Department? In Washington, the State Department said on Saturday that it “strongly condemns the use of harsh tactics against protesters and journalists” in Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry countered by claiming that the United States had helped “incite radical elements” to join the unauthorized protests and that American officials were “facing a serious talking-to” by Russian diplomats.

Statement by Secretary Pompeo on the Arrest of Aleksey NavalnyDepartment of StateOffice of the SpokespersonFor Immediate ReleasePress Statement by Michael R. PompeoJanuary 17, 2021The United States strongly condemns Russia’s decision to arrest Aleksey Navalny. We note with grave concern that his detention is the latest in a series of attempts to silence Navalny and other opposition figures and independent voices who are critical of Russian authorities.Confident political leaders do not fear competing voices, nor commit violence against or wrongfully detain political opponents. The Russian people, like people everywhere, deserve a government that supports an open marketplace of ideas, transparent and accountable governance, an independent judiciary, and the ability to exercise their basic human rights of speech and assembly without fear of retribution. We urge the Russian government to provide a level playing field for all political parties and candidates seeking to compete in the electoral process. Aleksey Navalny is not the problem. We demand his immediate and unconditional release.
...Jeepers, how long has it been since the State Department condemned Russia's actions against protesters and political dissidents? If you guessed a week you'd be right....Much like Slo-Joe, they can't remember what happened a day ago, let again a week ago.
