Hey, good news on the income front: The Census Bureau reported yesterday that median earnings for full-time male workers rose by $1,653 last year, to $45,113, after adjusting for inflation.

Another year like that, and maybe the typical male worker will finally catch up to where he was in 1973.

Truth is, despite the squishy nature of income data, things haven't been so great for the middle and working class for some time. Every now and again you get a good year like last year, when wages and household incomes increased. That's usually at the tail end of an economic expansion.

But over the past 35 years, the typical American household has managed to eke out only a 15 percent increase in its pretax income. During that same period, the productivity of the American worker -- the value of the goods and services produced per hour worked -- has increased by 90 percent.

This is fodder for the usual moonbat class envy outrage. What these statistics never point out is that the financial situation of the "typical household" has changed enormously since 1973 due to the incredible explosion in the number of "households" consisting of minority single parents, popping out kids like clockwork. This is a direct result of three or four generations of Great Society programs.

This enormous, rapidly expanding underclass (glimpsed in the Katrina aftermath) grotesquely distorts any stats that purport to show how the "average" family is doing historically.

We never see historical data to show how the average "traditional" family, or the average "responsible" family is doing. But from direct experience, I can tell you: Pretty damn well.

One needs to read the article that was linked to get an idea behind the idiocy that drives leftist economics.

Somehow in their wisdom they have decided that markets or businesses should have the human attribute of fairness.
Humans have it because we are living creatures with a soul and that sets us apart from animals.
Is is fair that hunting lions prey on the weakest of the herd?
By libs standards no but try to stop them.

A business is a non living entity formed to provide goods or services to those who want them.
No market for a good then there will be no business providing it.
It doesn`t know fairness nor can it be held to the individual whims of those outside the running of it.

I don`t know the authors background but for someone to write such drivel as a so called business columnist is beyond stupid.
If you want fairness as you see it then by all means start a business and pay all your employees more money then is taken in,pay yourself nothing though as you are only there for the good of someone else.

I listen to Public Radio a lot, just because the talk-talk-talk keeps me awake (mostly by making me mad.   )  They did an entire show on how kids "these days" can't afford to go to expensive private colleges or state universities, but instead have to fall back on community colleges because the economy is so bad.

I guess the economy was pretty bad in the '70's too, because I started out at a community college...my parents couldn't afford a state university.  Mr Smith had the same experience.

Of course, in my Dad's generation...he didn't go to college at all.  He was drafted into the Army.  My Mom went to college...but she worked full-time to put herself through school.  Her parents couldn't afford it.

Seriously, has there EVER been a time when everyone could afford to send their kids to college?     DUH!!  (with the exception of much of this generation...the Dims have been in power long enough in some states, and now the courts can order the parents to pay for their children's college.   )

But the Dim and libs go right on whining about something that has always been this way, as though someone OWES them an education...just as someone OWES them free healthcare.
