I'm in my fifties and people have begun to die.

Here on DU, there are posts about people dying in their 80's and 90's. But one of my college friends just died of lung cancer, and he couldn't have been more than 60.

People joke that when you get "older", it's common to talk about ailments. Creaky knees, etc. But the reality of "over the hill" hit me hard today. "Over the hill" - people in your life start to die. And the older you get, the more will die.

I'm not ready. They say that 50 is the new 40. Bullshit. That number is a serious marker, and I will have to acknowledge it, and deal with it. Over the years, starting now, one by one, I will lose my friends.

My mom died at 92, and she lived in a place where there were people approaching 100. I had a woman say to me that Growing Old Isn't for Sissies. There is a lot of physical and emotional pain in getting old. Saying good-bye to good friends.

I will always remember that woman, because she used to sit outside of mom's apartment, happily chatting away with someone I assumed was a good friend. Nope, not a good friend. Just a temporary friend, when all of the meaningful friends had all died. And then the temporary friend died. I offered condolences and she looked at me very strangely. I realized that she had seen lots and lots of death. It's sort of like being left behind.

So, my DU friends, if you have read this far, remember to make friends 20 years younger than you who will outlive you. Because outliving your friends hurts.

I'm 57. I put in 4 miles of brand new four wire fence in the last two weeks. My Dad in 83. He is a bit slower but was working right beside me. Our neighbor, 81, was diagnosed with bone cancer. He drove the tractor every day.

Not sure what your point is, you ****ing *****.

6. Interesting

I hadn't thought about "outliving" Trump. But I want him out of office, and I want a chance to see a recovered, better America. Reborn, with new priorities, new understanding of what is important, who is important, who should not be taken for granted, and how we need to take better care of each other.

I believe we will see this in the next two years. So, please stick around for it!

8. A lot of us have already lost friends, young, old, average age, whatever, if they were HIV+,

It (HIV+) ravished entire communities, all ages. It becomes kind of a somber routine before you know it, and then you live it, the whole sad process, of losing friends, coworkers, etc. all ages, for literally years, until it's wiped all of them out.

Anyone who knows someone who works in hospice care could tell Star Member qwlauren35 that they have patients of a very wide range of ages. People who have been born have a slightly greater than 100% death rate, and diseases of old age are far from the sole causes of death. Cancers, for example, have no respect for youth.

Welcome to real life, Star Member qwlauren35.

Well, naturally primitives are dying before their threescore-and-seven is up.

Rampant drug use either licit or illicit from believing in this "better living through chemistry" bullshit, AIDS from being promiscuous, obesity from not working for a living, sloth from being lazy and expecting other people to do the work, alcoholism from feeling sorry for themselves, &c., &c., &c.

One of my high school classmates went partying between the end of our senior year and our graduation. He died in a car crash.

One of my Dad's brothers lived to age 90, as did my Dad. Their other brother died of pancreatic cancer in his late 40s. never having seen his children graduate from high school.

One of my cousins - along with his wife and younger daughter - died in a fiery crash, courtesy of some guy who crossed the freeway median and hit them head-on. He was 49, his wife a couple years younger, and their daughter just age 10. There was not not left of the guy who hit them to determine whether he was intoxicated or just fell asleep at the wheel.

I think most people in their teens or 20s on up have memories like these.

Wow, the odds of that happening are in the range of .0000004%. The DUchebag is extremely unlucky... well his friends are or the DUchebag could be lying.... hmmmm I wonder which of those it could be?
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

I'm 58 and there were 54 people in my graduating class. 9 of my classmates have already passed away. Hell, some died within a few years of graduating. Age is just a number.

My aunt recently turned 103, she still lives alone and gets by on her own.

Somebody must've skipped Math class when "averages" were discussed and practiced.

Why did qwlauren35 leave out the pertinent details of her friends' recent demise?  We all know that decades of smoking, indolence and obesity were the (likely) causative factors.

Oh, that's right....DUmmies spin EVERYTHING to try to make it political.
