Oh my.

The primitive, being a long-ago hippie, probably supposed medical science and technology would keep him young forever.

<<<suspects the primitive was high on dope, when thought that.

I'm 70 years old.

This Summer I noticed that I didn't have the stamina I used to. Mowing the lawn would leave me gasping. I chalked it up to a rather slothful Winter, but then instead of getting better it got worse. By the end of Summer I was getting out of breath walking the aisles at the grocery store, and be the beginning of November, walking from one room the another would leave me panting.

Now, I'm not a big fan of running to the doctor at every little thing, but I'm not an idiot who refuses to go when necessary. So, I had an appointment coming up with my cardiologist and he always asks me about 'shortness of breath'. So, I brought it up with him. Unfortunately it turns out he is a 'heart' guy only. If its not related to your heart he isn't particularly interested.

He said my heart sounded OK, but he would do an echo cardiogram to be sure and I should come back in two weeks. So, I scheduled the test and went to get the appointment, but he had evidently had forgotten that in two weeks he would have just started a two week vacations. Grrr. They had told me that it would take about 5 working days to get the results of the echo. After 7 working days, I called and was told that the doctor (the one who wouldn't be back for another 3 weeks) had to review the results before they would release them to me. Bigger Grrr.

A few days later, evidently after someone had actually looked at the results, the office called and told me that if I was still having shortness of breath I should go to the ER. Medium sized explosion!

So. I called my PCP (we used to call them GP's) and got in to see him the next day. He listened carefully and sent me across the hall for blood work and an X-ray. Later that day my PCP called and said the X-rays weren't clear enough and I needed an CAT scan, which he had already scheduled for me two days later. After the CAT scan he again called the same day and gave me a referral to surgeon for a lung biopsy. I went in this past Wed morning and just got home this afternoon. The problem is they still don't know what is causing the scaring, so they don't know how to treat it. (Really Big Sigh)

It will take 5-10 working days to get the results of the biopsy. (Whimper)

So, hopefully, we will finally find out IF we have an answer and IF there is any sort of treatment to slow things down. (Sigh)

I'll post again when/if we learn anything. But at least I found some doctors who took things seriously.

<<<suspects that a lack of stamina and shortness of breath is inevitable when one's three score and ten.

And so best to be prepared for it beginning when one's still young.

and you'll be out there pushing the darn lawn mower again this summer. Wishing you well, Stonepounder!

9. I'm your age and am getting ready to fire my doctor.

Will be the 3rd doctor I've dumped in 4 years.

I'm a little more tired than I use to be and chucked it up to age. So, I started running to get fit. 10 years ago a doctor told me I'd never run again because of my right knee. So, I'm going slow, but do feel better. I run(slow jog, 15minute miles). I do 3 to 4 miles about every other day, depending on the weather.

Been watching my blood pressure for a few years and now have a healthy BP. I take it about every day. Just started to notice that my pulse rate seemed a little slow, about 45 beats per minute. Looked it up on the net and found out it is called Bradycardia. Looks like I'm a super athlete or something is wrong. Had an ECT that showed first degree A-V, not good. My doc says I'm normal and I'm not buying it. Trying to get in to see a cardiologist and waiting for a referral that I haven't got yet.

So, last week I became a vegetarian. Looks like about the only possible cure for clogged arteries.

What is it about GPs that they have become gate keepers only. I've had this doctor for 2 years and any complaint, he sends me to a specialist. Has never seen me with my shirt off or every looked up my nose on down my throat. He has listen to my chest a few times and thats it.

That last doctor I liked, down in Ohio was an old DO. He was great. So, I'm going to look for another one like him.

Some ten years ago my cardiologist started admonishing me that if I didn't start doing moderate exercise just to maintain muscle mass I would start losing it. Not too many years after was when I started doing street and trail runs, and also moderate weight training. It won't prevent The Big C, but it will forestall muscle loss and heart disease. Getting to see scenery like this ain't half bad, either:

A 62YO FB Friend recently used a 24 hour endurance event to do 100 Km (62.2 miles).

The two pix are Point Pinole Regional Park, in which I've done quite a few trail runs, and Wilder Ranch State Park, through which the Santa Cruz Half Marathon goes.

........ Getting to see scenery like this ain't half bad, either:

That is awesome Pete.

Where I live we have a rail trail, the major feature of The Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor (PA). Mostly a rail trail along the Lehigh River but on the Delaware (and parts of the Lehigh)  the trail is on the old canal towpath. All but the southern most 10 miles of the trail, which is actually 140 miles long, is scenic as can be. Great views and awesome scenery.

Anyway the D&L as they call the actual trail is billed as 165 miles long with a few minor gaps. Most of the gaps, there are four major gaps, have infrastructure in place to close the gap or at least have some or all of the funding to close the gaps but the machine will not allow this. The D&L for their part gets a lot of it's funding and from donations and they use a lot of volunteer labor to run things. To put it in simple form, the D&L doesn't own any of the trail, they advise the owners (towns and so forth) on how to obtain grant money. Their main task is to fund raise to keep themselves in business. They are good at fundraising.

All of this comes at the expense of the truth. I don't want to say the D&L actually lies but they do take liberties and make promises and predictions that they I believe know in advance are not accurate. The biggest most  famous example is in Carbon County, the county has built a 250' trail bridge over the Lehigh River in Jim Thorpe. This bridge cost over 4 million dollars. It was dedicated last June but not opened and remains closed. The D&L and other agencies say that work on the eastern bank will be completed in the Spring (2019) thus allowing the bridge to open. Up until about a month before the dedication there was no real hint that the bridge opening was going to have a big delay. The work on the east bank is tied to work on the waste water treatment plant. There is no way the work will be completed in the Spring, they haven't even started the work, will not start it until the winter thaw and the work costs one million dollars (to give you an idea of the scale of the work) work which no one said anything about when the bridge was in the planning stage. In the mean time the outfitters that service the area are holding the bag waiting for word on when the bridge will be opened. It might seem trivial but the canal that it will connect to is, without the bridge, a 4 mile dead end road with no outlets. Opening the bridge will put 100s of visitors in the down town of Jim Thorpe per day, visitors they hope are eager to spend money.

The D&L urged businesses in Carbon County to make plans to receive 1000s of visitors riding mountain bikes on the trail when the bridge opens, it was supposed to open in 2016, then 2017, 2018 now they say Spring 2019. All eyes are on the east bank work however the west bank empties out into the county (pay) parking lot. There is money to build a bypass trail around the parking lot and it is obvious to me at least that the east bank work and thus the bridge opening will be delayed for as long as possible because having the trail go thru the parking lot is like having a bicycle trail go through a WalMart parking lot. Dangerous.

So everyone regardless of their feelings on the bridge is pissed and the closed bridge right there in Jim Thorpe stands there like a scab that refuses to heal. Opening the bridge will connect the canal to the Lehigh Gorge trail which has spectacular views and is an easy ride. The D&L has stopped talking about the bridge in their fundraising letters to members and the local media doesn't print updates. It all comes down to the problem of raising money to close gaps when there is no chance that a 90% completed project is going to be completed in a reasonable amount of time, rather it seems remaining 10% will take another 2 years to complete. Huge public embarrassment. And then if there are no gaps left, how do you bully people into making donations? The tactic being employed is classic carrot and stick. The trail will someday be 165 miles long I have no doubt about that but it will be at least another 15 years before that happens. The upper 10 miles is 10 years away for sure, the lower 10 is going to be very difficult to finish as the trail will need to cross several major highways right outside of Philly and are very big safety problems.

Re his comment about "knowing" he could not find a job again at age 60, I did a job search at age 61 and found one in 3 months. Might've had another one one earlier, but several people who would have contributed to their hiring decision were on summer vacation.

If he's regained the weight he lost 6 or 7 years ago, that might have somewhat to do with his loss of stamina.
