mycritters2 (1000+ posts) Thu Aug-21-08 10:27 PMOriginal messageWhy do military people all seem to mispronounce "Eye-rack"? Advertisements [?]It seems like people who've been there would pronounce it correctly, but I'm listening to yet another military guy on KO, and he pronounces it Eye-rack, too. What's with that?
Cleita (1000+ posts) Thu Aug-21-08 10:28 PMResponse to Original message1. Most of those guys seem to be southerners. Is it because of their accent?
question everything (1000+ posts) Thu Aug-21-08 10:31 PMResponse to Original message3. Many mis prounounce it, and since there are more "Obama people" than there are Hillary's - certainly on the media, I would say that Obama people mis pronounce it. Now, doesn't it sound silly? Why not go outside, shout to the world that you hate Hillary, throw in Bill for good measure and find something else to worry about?
delete_bush (1000+ posts) Thu Aug-21-08 10:32 PMResponse to Original message4. Could it be a subconscious Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 10:33 PM by delete_bushway to dehumanize the people of Iraq. ???Makes the real person seem more like a video game. Easier to kill that way.
Husb2Sparkly (1000+ posts) Thu Aug-21-08 10:36 PMResponse to Original message7. Dumbnitude ..... .... and it isn't only military people.
harun (1000+ posts) Thu Aug-21-08 10:37 PMResponse to Original message9. The first letter in Arabic is Ayn, no perfect English equivalent so it is expected that they will mis-pronounce it. I have been working on Arabic for about 4 years and I still can't come close to pronouncing Ayn consistently correct like a native speaker. Can get close now though. On wikipedia's page they have an .ogg audio file of correct pronunciation:http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fd/Ar-a...
frebrd (453 posts) Thu Aug-21-08 10:43 PMResponse to Original message11. Determined, deliberate ignorance. A form of arrogance. Somewhat akin to the British pronunciation of "Kenya" as "Keenya", for instance. A not too subtle way of insulting "the natives".

At first it was probably just a slam on John Kerry, who served in Vietnam. Then I think it just became habit or just part of the military vernacular.
