John Conyers Hospitalized For Stress-Related Illness Amid Sex Scandal

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) – Congressman John Conyers has been hospitalized for a stress-related illness.

Family spokesperson Sam Riddle confirmed Thursday morning that the 88-year-old Conyers is seeking treatment at a local hospital. Riddle declined to detail exactly what Conyers is suffering from, but he told TV reporters it was stress-related.

“Monica Conyers, Mrs. Conyers, is by his side and we just ask, really the nation, to pray for this Congressman that has done so much for the nation,” Riddle told WWJ’s Ron Dewey.

Conyers, the longest-serving member of the U.S. House, is currently embroiled in a scandal after being accused of sexual misconduct by several former female staff members.

Stress is a very real health issue.

People might be imagining an "ELIZABETH, HERE I COME" type of moment with Conyers exploiting it to stop the allegations. But having a secret shame that comes out is enough to knock the props out from under anyone.

I'm not excusing Conyers, I'm just saying it might be ironic if this ends up being the literal death of him.
He always looks the picture of health to my eyes, strutting around in his custom tailored suits.

For that to work, he'd have to actually be ashamed of it, and we all know better than that.  What he has is "Dammit I got caught stress syndrome."

His days in Congress are probably numbered, but the memory that the corrupt Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was replaced by the corrupt Charles Rangel does not encourage me.
