Surrender Your Guns, Police Tell Hawaiian Medical Marijuana Patients


The Honolulu Police Department has sent letters to local medical marijuana patients ordering them to “voluntarily surrender” their firearms because of their MMJ status.

The letters, signed by Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard, inform patients that they have 30 days upon receipt of the letter to transfer ownership or turn in their firearms and ammunition to the Honolulu Police.

The existence of the notices, first reported early today by Russ Belville at The Marijuana Agenda podcast, was confirmed to Leafly News this afternoon by the Honolulu Police Department.

The startling order comes just three months after the state’s first medical marijuana dispensary opened in Hawaii’s capital city.

Other states will follow. Federal law prohibits marijuana users from buying guns.

It's not just buying, it's mere possession of a firearm or ammunition, Federal felony just for that alone if they happen to get snaffled up and are holding any guns or ammo.  Though I don't have a huge amount of sympathy for the dopers, they did this to themselves.

They should also have to turn in their driver's licenses and any motor vehicles they happen to own.

This is a situation that is way to complex for their little befuddled minds to comprehend.  :mental:  The fact that doing something that they consider good can have an effect on some other thing that they may or may not like is just to much for them.  :mental:

The bottom line is that while it may be ok in your state to use pot it is still not legal federally and the BATF has changed the wording on the 4473's to include  medical pot. So you are inviolation of federal law using pot and possessing firearms.
