Congress’s Schedule Too Full of Must-Pass Bills, Can’t Take Up DACA Re-Amnesty Vote

Congress’ gridlocked calendar will likely prevent amnesty advocates from reincarnating the DACA program before President Donald Trump formally ends the amnesty in March 2018.

But there’s little chance that a new push will succeed because Congress’ September calendar is packed with must-pass bills. In September, for example, legislators must pass an Obamacare overhaul, a debt-ceiling vote and an aid package for flooded Houston.

Moreover, Trump’s bipartisan anti-amnesty electorate is mobilized, and Democratic legislators remember the painful lesson of the bipartisan “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” in 2013 and 2014. Because of that 2014 mid-year election, the Democrats lost 10 Senate seats, Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell became Majority Leader, and real-estate investor Donald Trump moved closer towards his run for the White House.

Obama To Speak Out If Trump Ends DACA

Another part of his legacy down the drain.

Via Politico:

Former President Barack Obama plans to speak out if President Donald Trump declares his intention to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, according to a person close to Obama.

Trump is expected to announce on Tuesday that in six months, he will terminate the Obama-era DACA initiative, which grants two-year work permits to undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and stayed out of trouble. POLITICO first reported the news.

Obama used executive actions to launch the program in June 2012, providing assurances before his re-election that he would protect the so-called “Dreamers.” Trump had suggested in the past that he didn’t want to deport Dreamers, saying in April that they should “rest easy,” but the immigration hawks in his administration have argued that DACA is an illegal program.

Obama’s current plan is to post a statement on Facebook and link to it on Twitter, where the former president has more than 94 million followers. In his final presidential press availability, he suggested that he would speak out if Trump went after the Dreamers — and that it was one of the few issues where he would feel morally compelled to do so. He said he would not remain silent in the face of “efforts to round up kids who have grown up here and for all practical purposes are American kids, and send them someplace else, when they love this country.”

Nancy Pelosi: Trump showing 'political cowardice' by ending DACA

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi said Monday President Trump will be demonstrating "political cowardice" if he ends the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

"President Trump's decision to end DACA should break the hearts and offend the morals of all who believe in justice and human dignity," Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a statement. "This cruel act of political cowardice deals a stunning blow to the bright young DREAMers and to everyone who cherishes the American Dream."

Trump on Tuesday is expected to declare he will end DACA, a program former President Barack Obama created unilaterally that protects certain immigrants who were brought illegally to the U.S. as children and gives them work permits.

Pelosi called on Republicans to support such legislation.

"House Republicans must join Democrats to pass legislation to safeguard our young DREAMers from the senseless cruelty of deportation and shield families from separation and heartbreak," she said.
