Even so, why mask yourself? If you can't stand up for your position as yourself, what point is there in your protest. You lose your identity when you hide behind a mask. You're not saying "I protest this."

Not on the left, completely out of the spectrum?  They go on a week long violent, destructive rampage after Cankles gets schlonged in the election, beat the crap out of Trump supporters, and prevent conservatives from speaking at colleges.  They are anchored firmly on the left end of the spectrum.  Their politics are indistinguishable from the shitgibbons at democrat underground.

There are actually three reasons, all firmly rooted in the key liberal personality trait of cowardice:
1. They want to make it harder for the police to identify and arrest them when they attack conservatives and throw Molotovs through store windows.
2. They want to lessen the risk of their rich parents recognizing them in news footage of the riots and cutting off their trust funds.
3. They want to hide the fact that they, like most if not all Anarchist scum, have hideously rotted teeth due to a combination of all the crystal meth they take (Which in turn also explains why they're always so eager to get violent), and the fact that Anarchists tend to believe that all forms of personal hygiene are for Nazis.

The "Black bloc" type anarchist scum (Which Antifa and similar groups are the latest incarnation of) that you see at protests hold ultra- uber- liberal positions on pretty much everything, that's why they're at those protests. I know this because I've seen their demented websites, and my brother used to be a part of such idiot groups. Much as skinheads and other such white- supremacist groups represent the ultra- lunatic- fringe of the right, the "Black bloc" anarchists represent part of the ultra- lunatic- fringe of the left.

I've got a different view of it, personally. It's what you said, but the other reason to want anonymity is recoil.
See, BLM and Antifa are mostly powerless fools and cucks... the only weapon of power they possess is mob chaos and destruction. Individually, or even in small groups, they are powerless and highly vulnerable.
sure, they want to avoid arrest, but I think the police are the least of their worries. Few are ever arrested or prosecuted, even back when most of them DIDN'T wear their cute bandannas over their faces. I believe they are far more afraid of Americans, their boss, their neighbor, their parents, etc.
Getting your ass stomped out on Saturday night in a bar, then getting fired Monday morning (for the ones who actually WORK) are both prices they aren't willing to pay. These are gang hobbyists for the most part

The bolded is incorrect. It is MSM propaganda. They are NOT part of the right.

Skinheads and other white-supremacy groups approach their hatred from a functionalist standpoint, stating that the white man is the foundation of civilization and that white men martyr themselves for continuation of civilization. That is what one of their common tattoos, the white man on a cross, represents.
 
They are grievance collectors, like other leftists, and as the Nazis (It's the Jews fault) were, the Leninists (Romanovs!), Khmer Rouge (educated people), etc. they scapegoat a group in order to make them subhuman. And like other leftists, they have their own issues to champion. Their issue is too many POC. For BLM, it's too many white people. For Antifa, it's too many Nazis (at least in their perception).

Any group that judges someone by the color of their skin is not on the side of freedom or individual liberty, they are on the side of marginalization of human life and ultimately elimination of their enemies. Do not associate white supremacy with the right, it is diametrically opposed to their ideals.
