At Bellevue town hall, Rep. Fortenberry urges both sides to come together, work

Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, R-Neb., displayed two constituent letters Monday at a town hall in Bellevue. One said the federal Affordable Care Act was a “godsend,” and another said the writer’s insurance rates had risen dramatically.

“Now who’s right?” Fortenberry asked. “They’re both right.”

The congressman called on both parties to come together and work on changes to the Affordable Care Act as he heard differing views Monday from a sometimes emotional and mostly civil crowd. At his first town hall meeting during the August recess, many questions focused on the country’s health care system, but Fortenberry also fielded questions about abortion, military funding, transgender military members and medical cannabis.

“I don’t expect us to have a happy conversation, but let’s have a productive conversation,” he told the crowd at the beginning of the hourlong event.
