I've been out of pocket all day so maybe I missed it. He's a guy in from Illinois who picked, out of ALL PLACES, to be at that field where congressionalmembers were.
Why that field at that time today? 7am..really?
If the asshole had plans to harm congressional officials why not be IN DC.

What am I missing?

Well that's disappointing ... didn't see anyone take the CT bait.

  The timing of the game has probably been online for months, and probably several Reps posted the practice on their weekly schedules. As for why not in DC ... because there's fewer security outside of the Capitol area, Duh-UUUUUH!

While it cannot be known whether the would-be mass assassin saw the NYT article - probably other sources have published similar information - it is an answer to rainbow4321's CT-mongering. The Congressional baseball game is a decades-long tradition, and the Congress-Critters' practices in preparation for it are public knowledge. The WH post on the Internet Trump's (and Obama before him, and probably "W" before him) daily schedule. Congress Critters have similar schedule pages (McClintock's only lists townhalls, but others may list other sorts of events), and they also do press releases on issues and activities. As one of the first DU-folk to respond pointed out, the information is out there, publicly available for those who to find it.

Oh, I strongly suspect that the FBI is combing through his internet history at this very moment, both on his laptop and whatever he accessed from home in Illinois.  I'm guessing that they find out just how he knew about this particular location on this particular day in short order.  While he probably did some personal observation from his van down by the river (this is literally how some MSM radio news report described it: a van down by the river) and the YMCA that is apparently next door, I'm willing to bet dollars to doughnuts that he saw some article on this, either the NYT article or some other, similar article, and that's ultimately what triggered him to travel to Virginia in the first place.

I suspect he knew of this baseball game from years past (he's 66), checked when it would be, and traveled to DC before learning when/where practices would be held (which he probably did when he got to DC, using some of the myriad free Internet hotspots at businesses. I'd guess the WashPost and a couple of local papers had info in their "Local" sections.

The big point is that "rainbow4321" insinuation that it was a false-flag attack doesn't hold up to even cursory consideration. There's no "there" there in his/her Gotcha. Not that facts matter on DU.
