Just emailed Disneyworld. Our family trip to Orlando park---grandkids, kids and us---cancelled.

Scott's signing into law the reversal of the burden of proof in "stand your ground" cases is the reason. If someone shoots you now in Florida, they no longer have to prove that they reasonably feared imminent attack from you in order to be protected by "stand your ground". Now, it is the prosecution's burden to PROVE THAT YOU DID NOT REASONABLY FEAR ATTACK!!

Think about that. Ever try to "prove a negative"? It is "open season" now on anyone who looks or thinks "diffurnt" in the Sunshine State.

Mickey should leave on the next bus.

Disney has gay day at DW. You should do everything you can to hurt them...

because... they had nothing to do with the law.

47. I stopped vacationing in Florida when a correlation between vehicles driven and road aggression made.
If you drive a car with out-of-state plates on them, many people will **** with you, knowing you aren't carrying.
If you drive a car with in-state plates on them, people leave you alone.
When you get a rental, make sure it has FL plates on it. In fact, if you go to any SYG state, make sure you are driving an in-state registered vehicle. People see rental stickers or foreign license plates and they know you're a tourist and out of your element.
We stopped visiting FL, twice a year, to vacation and visit family. We take out money to better states. This was four years ago, and we havent been back since. FL lost out on $5-7K each year in vacation revenue.

Just in writing that made me think that there is little doubt someone will try to shoot a Muslim and claim they are threatened by them by their existence.

Good gawd, Florida

I am so fricking glad we did not get that loan...and I bet my bottom dollar it was because we were a MIXED COUPLE...

When Obama was president, the red necks who would be our neighbor didn't look so threatening...now they could be murderers and claim "stand your ground"

We'd be dead...who would be on OUR side?

I live in and love Florida. You make it sound like we are Beruit in the 80s. I live in a middle class neighborhood in the orlando area. Lots of mixed couples. No crosses being burnt in yards and no one being run out town for being a liberal. And some of our neighbors are rednecks.

I am more concerned when visiting my wife's family in lilly white rural Indiana. Those people have lost touch with the rest of the world.

14. This only applies to pretrial proceedings, not that it may not be significant.

Under the US justice system, the prosecution already has the burden of proof for every required element of a crime. In Florida as elsewhere.

It's not that this may not be significant, but in some cases it will have no effect at all. In some cases it may lead to defendants not being tried where otherwise they would have been.

Oh, stop bringing common sense into all this.

85. I very seldom call out a fellow DU member

But we are a fact based community and expect post to reflect that. My state of Florida has a murder rate of around five citizens per hundred thousand. And you recommend that a fellow DU member take their family to the Bahamas because Florida is too dangerous now. And because Republicans are bad and we should teach those stupid voters a lesson.

The Bahamas have a murder rate of almost 30 per 100,000 people. So you are recommending that a DU member take the family to a place where they have a six times higher chance of being murdered. Because Florida is now too dangerous

That's a hell of a way to make a statement against a republican governor

94. This is about a bad law, not a murder rate and your argument is with the OP, not me.

You know both of those facts. Now act of them.

96. My discussion was about your post

The law is bad why? Makes Florida more dangerous, right? Otherwise it would not be a bad law, correct?

I do not support the law but doubt it will be used much. Mainly criminals killing criminals when things go bad. So a bad law.

But to me, recommending that because Florida had a bad law that makes the state potentially more dangerous he should insteadm go to a place 6x more dangerous than Florida is nonsense.

Had you suggested France I would have kindly agreed

17. The state is full of absolute idiots.

...and not only in government.
The old profile of the dumb redneck isn't the primary cause either, although they do exist plentifully here.
More distressing is the relocated retired civil servants from the North. These people are painfully idiotic, are very similar to the current WH occupant, and will have be tolerated until attrition takes its' toll.
This is the O'Reilly crowd, blissfully careening through life on a golf cart while they keep electing right-wing lunatics to the State House and Senate - and Governor of all things.
Clearly, these republican cretins are "new" (as Shithead Ryan says) to governing, and it shows.
Less money for public schools, no health care, corporate welfare and no oversight for the environment.
All this brought to you by people who personally benefited from labor unions and liberal policies. Not much hope for this place anymore.

Accident? Roll up your windows, do not get out of the car, and call police immediately on cell phone, You might get shot. Cut off by another driver? Same. Roll up windows, and get away as fast as possible. Do NOT say anything to them. You might get shot.

Cut in front of you on a line? LET them. Do not argue. Basically, be one step ahead of a potentially lethal situation, and do not open your mouth, because you will never know who you might encounter.

This was my philosophy, even as an old woman, living in Florida before this new law. We moved out 6 months ago. I never expected my age and gender to protect me from a crazy.

I know for a sure and certain fact that Guest at Disney go through metal detectors. And the biometric system is state of the art.

It would be more difficult getting a gun into a Disney park than the Airport.

And Disney no longer allows off duty LEOs to keep their firearms. They provide lockers for them outside the park.

I have been to Florida many times before the state got insane about guns. After Trayvon hit murdered and Zimmer got I vowed never to spend a dime there ever again. Stand your ground laws are dangerous and insane. I try to avoid those states except I can't escape Arizona because my hubby's family lives there. But when I go I try to stay inside and never make eye contact with people if I go outside to a store or public place. I never feel comfortable until I cross into California again.

45. I can understand. We head for our annual vacation in the USA in 3 weeks

This year, my wife will not leave the confines of Massachusetts.

It didn't help that the last time we were in the States together, we were in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (I had some work there, and we have friends who live there, though we had never been there before) right when that nut case shot up the passenger area of the airport the day before we were supposed to leave. We had to re-book out of another airport, but she said at the time the German equivalent of, "Trump isn't even in office yet, and already this country has gone nuts!" She hears about all the shootings in the States, of course, as the European media reports on all of them, but they usually don't happen right under out noses. One guy from my outfit was leaving back for Dallas a day before we were leaving and he was right there when it happened. He said he was around to tell the tale because none of the bullets had his name on them that day. Pure chance.

Maybe Rick Scott is nostalgic for the gunfights of the Miami Vice TV series, and wants to see some more action-packed scenes in his state.

Is he talking about this:
Quote
Multiple people are dead and more wounded after a gunman opened fire in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2 at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Jan. 6, 2017. The gunman was taken into custody.

Just so you remember this 'non-terrorist' attack:

Quote
The Ft. Lauderdale Airport shooter is a Muslim convert who years before joining the U.S. Army took on an Islamic name (Aashiq Hammad), downloaded terrorist propaganda and recorded Islamic religious music online, according to public records dug up by the investigative news site of an award-winning, California journalist. This is pertinent information that the Obama administration apparently wants to keep quiet, bringing up memories of the Benghazi cover up, in which the president and his cohorts knowingly lied to conceal that Islamic terrorists attacked the U.S. Special Mission in Libya.

Information is slowly trickling out that links the Ft. Lauderdale Airport shooter to radical Islam while the official story from authorities is that the gunman is a mentally ill, Hispanic Army veteran named Esteban Santiago that became unhinged after a tour in Iraq. Only one mainstream media outlet mentions the possibility of Santiago’s “jihadist identity,” burying it in a piece about New York possibly being his initial target. A paragraph deep in the story mentions that investigators recovered Santiago’s computer from a pawn shop and the FBI is examining it to determine whether he created a “jihadist identity for himself using the name Aashiq Hammad…” The rest of the traditional mainstream media coverage promotes the government rhetoric that omits any ties to terrorism even though early on a photo surfaced of Santiago making an ISIS salute while wearing a keffiyeh, a Palestinian Arab scarf.

The public records uncovered in the days after the massacre suggest Santiago (Hammad) is a radical Islamic terrorist that’s seriously committed to Islam. Besides taking on a Muslim name, he recorded three Islamic religious songs, including the Muslim declaration faith (“there is no God but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger”) known as the Shahada. He also posted a thread about downloading propaganda videos from Islamic terrorists on a weapons and explosives forum. The investigative news site that unearthed this disturbing information connected the dots between Santiago, who is of Puerto Rican descent, and Hammad, an identity he created in 2007.

This week a prominent Ft. Lauderdale businessman and longtime resident addressed a letter to the city’s mayor and commissioners blasting county and federal officials for covering up that “Aashiq Hammad, not Esteban Santiago, attacked our city and county.” The businessman, respected Ft. Lauderdale real estate entrepreneur Jim Morlock, specifically names Broward County’s elected sheriff Scott Israel, Florida senator Bill Nelson, the first to identify Santiago as the shooter on national television, and congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, ousted last summer as Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair over a scandalous plot to damage Bernie Sanders during the primary.

“Since when does a US Senator (Bill Nelson), not law enforcement, be the one to so quickly release this terrorist’s Hispanic name but nothing about his more relevant Islamic background?” the letter asks. Obama must have told Sen. Nelson to keep this from looking like a Muslim Terrorist attack during the last 12 days of his watch. Bad for his legacy.” Morlock goes on to state that it’s “better to portray this atrocity as white Hispanic Alaskan mental Iraq war vet gun violence.” The real estate entrepreneur proceeds to reveal that Santiago lives in walking distance to the only mosque in Alaska, was radicalized before he entered the military and was knowingly allowed to serve despite his Islamic sympathies thanks to “Obama’s PC military.”

The letter poses interesting questions, including why this Muslim terrorist chose Ft. Lauderdale out of all the nation’s airports and who Santiago knows in Broward county, which has a large and growing Islamic community. In 2015 Judicial Watch obtained records from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) that show an Al Qaeda terrorist who helped plan several U.S. attacks lived in Broward County and graduated from the local community college with a degree in computer engineering. His name is Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, but he also has a Hispanic identity, Javier Robles, and for years he appeared on the FBI’s most wanted list. Back in 2012 Judicial Watch reported on a terrorist front group’s demands that Broward County public schools close twice a year to celebrate Islamic holy days, illustrating the influence that Muslims have in the region.

Deary, you don't need protection from crazy, it was and is living comfortably within you. Your move decreased the crazy in FL, significantly. I hope GC66 read your post. Carefully, And meditated on it. Because HM and "Atticus" and "Warpy" said exactly what they think of Floridians and Texans, facts be damned (as "Warpy" demonstrated).

GC66's bit about the murder rates in the US and the Bahamas got me curious, so I found and went to this W'pedia page.

The 2015 overall murder rate for the US is 4.89/100K.

The rate for FL is 5.1, 4.3% above average.

The rate for TX is 4.8, very slightly below average average, the same rate as CA, by the way.

Gun-happy ID's rate is 1.9.

Slow-Joe's home is 6.7.

WashDC is 24.2 (!!!).

IL is 5.8 (those gun-toting corn farmers probably offset some of Chi-Town's mayhem!).

I found out What's Wrong With Kansas ... it's below average ... a murder rate of 4.4. Neighboring Nebraska is 3.3.

Union Heaven Michigan is 5.8.

As I suggested above, where in a state there is a high murder rate is more informative. From W'pedia's page about cities' murder and non-negligent homicide rates:

Atlanta - 20.2

Chicago - 17.5

Baltimore - 55.2

Boston - 5.7

Detroit - 43.8

Houston - 13.3

New Orleans - 417

Newark, NJ - 33.3

Oakland - 20.3 (Pikers!)

Philadelphia - 17.9

St. Louis - 59.3

WashDC - 24.1

IOW, those rural people DU-folk despise generally lower - not raise - their respective states' murder rates (there are cities that do, also, e.g. Arllington & El Paso in TX or San Jose in CA or Lincoln in NE)! DU-folk should stick that in their fact-based :stoner: and smoke it!

As GC66 and that 1-post noob pointed out, that is pure BS - whether ignorant BS or malicious BS, I won't speculate. Mrs. SVPete and I were at WDW May last year. EVERYBODY goes through a bag search (shopping bags, backpacks, purses, whatever), and it isn't cursory. I didn't notice metal detectors, but I wasn't looking for them, either. EVERY person who enters goes through this, including those staying in a Disney hotel. I live in CA, and last year was our first time at WDW since 1982, so I can't comment about how long MouseWorld has been doing searches. OTOH, I can say, from experience, that MouseLand has been doing searches for many years.

Whether she's spouting ignorant or malicious alarmism, HM seems to be the sort that mental hospital patients would avoid, "Because she's crazy."

A lot of people who have never been to Florida seem to know a lot about daily life of the average Floridian.

I don't visit Alaska because I'll be eaten by a bear. I don't visit Chicago because I'll be gunned down by a gang banger. I don't visit New York because I'll be taxed to death by a mayor or governor.

As a Floridian I will say this. We have a beautiful state and it irks me when you northern libs come here and compare it to New York. We hjave lower taxes, less regulations and sunshine as well as reasonable gun rights.

Personally I Could care less if any of you bleeding heart left wing mother Fookers ever cross our border. We tolerate you because we are up to our ass in alligators in parts of the state and they need to be fed, as well as the sharks at the beaches.

For ant of you dousche bags that would like to come  will sell you a t shirt that says "Don't shoot I Voted For Trump."  They are $25.00 each and if you buy 2 you will get a free bumper sticker that says Don't shoot, I am a conservative.

The rest of you can buffer off :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

This is some semi effective moling here.  Dummie lords it over the rest of the dummies that it can afford to take three generations of his family to disney world. That is something most dummies could only have a wet dream about.  Then in the same sentence says it was cancelled. That has got to be a slap in the face to the piss poor dummies. After that it gives a bone to the piss poor dummies by ranting about Fla gun control or lack thereof.

All in all not too bad, not too good.  Would have been better if the dummie would have said it was going to disney in mexafornia instead.

So after careful consideration I'll give it a C plus on the Perky moling scale.

When my buddy and I vacationed in Florida back during the 90s crime spree we just took an NRA baseball cap and put it on the back deck of the rental car so it could be seen through the rear window. Figured that way we wouldn't be seen as an easy target.

You're an idiot.  Florida has one of the better concealed carry reciprocity and plus non residents can apply for Florida's permit.  Typical DUmmie spewing crap they know nothing about.

My thoughts exactly.

The boss and I went to the Daytona 500 back in 2013, and the only state that didn't honor our Virginia CCW's was Georgia.  We stored the gun in the camper going thru Georgia, and back in the truck at the first rest area in Florida.

This primitive expects us to believe he was willing to spend 10 years worth of cumulative income each year in FL?

Com'n primitives, just admit it. You can't afford to vacation in FL, and especially not DisneyWorld.

"Dear Disney, please cancel my vacation. I won't come there because I'm irrationally afraid of a very minor change in your gun laws."

Disney:

"Dear DUmmie, thank you for your non-refundable hotel deposit and all of the money you have just flushed on non-refundable theme park tickets."

Huh?  Florida is reciprocal. I've carried there many times since I'm licensed in Texas. And I've always driven my vehicle which, strangely enough, has Texas tags go figure.

Those Texas tags are probably a security enhancer!

Actually, Disney has a VERY generous refund policy. You get refunds on everything as long as you give them 48 hours notice.
