Republicans held onto Montana's only seat in the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday night, even after GOP nominee Greg Gianforte was cited for misdemeanor assault against a reporter hours before the polls opened.

Rob Quist, a Democrat from the Bernie Sanders wing of the party, proved a prodigious fundraiser by collecting nearly $7 million from the left-wing grassroots. But it wasn't enough for the cowboy hat-wearing folksinger to prevail in a state President Trump won handily last year.

The race was called shortly after midnight, when Gianforte was winning just over 50 percent of the vote to less than 44 percent for Quist. Libertarian Party nominee Mark Wicks took nearly 6 percent.

BODY SLAM VICTORY: Montana GOP Candidate Wins After Body Slamming Liberal Reporter

The State of Montana stood with Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte after he body slammed an obnoxious liberal reporter to the ground who many believed was trying to agitate the candidate.

Mediaite reported:

Right at the stroke of midnight Eastern Time, Decision Desk HQ has projected that Republican Greg Gianforte has defeated Democrat Rob Quist in the special election to fill Montana’s at-large House of Representatives seat. At the time of the projection, Gianforte had captured 50.9% of the vote compared to Quist’s 43.2%. Libertarian Mark Wicks had 5.8%. This was with about 62% of the precincts counted.

This special election to elect a replacement for Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke as Montana’s lone member of the House of Representatives suddenly got a lot more exciting when Gianforte bodyslammed Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs on Wednesday night.

WOW. While I don’t agree with violence, I will say that this speaks volumes about how everyday Americans feel about the left-wing media. https://t.co/b4zdoD6nWm

No one should be surprised. #MT

There’s no footage of Greg #Gianforte‘s bodyslam of Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs… or is there? #raw #smackdown pic.twitter.com/LgtZ0lt6xz

Gianforte apologizes to reporter after winning US House race

He emerged only at his victory celebration Thursday night, where he said he accepted responsibility for the incident. "Last night I made a mistake and I took an action I can't take back and I am not proud of what happened," Gianforte told the crowd. "I should not have responded the way I did and for that I am sorry."

Liberals Wanted a Fight in Montana. Democratic Leaders Saw a Lost Cause.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/us/montana-special-election.html?_r=0

Quote
BOZEMAN, Mont. — The Democratic defeat in a hard-fought special House election in Montana on Thursday highlighted the practical limitations on liberal opposition to President Trump and exposed a deepening rift between cautious party leaders, who want to pick their shots in battling for control of Congress in 2018, and more militant grass-roots activists who want to fight the Republicans everywhere.

Rob Quist, the Democratic nominee in Montana, staked his campaign on the Republican health care bill, but he still lost by six percentage points, even after his Republican opponent for the state’s lone House seat, Greg Gianforte, was charged with assaulting a reporter on the eve of the election.

A huge divide between leftists and Democratic leaders.

Montana Special’s Biggest Loser? The Media

Virtually every outlet called Montana a “test” for Trump. The day after the Republican won, the media changed its mind.

May 26, 2017

The morning after Republican Greg Gianforte’s special election win for Montana’s at-large congressional seat, the media were quick to discount the victory as an isolated incident. The Associated Press’s headline blared: “Was Montana’s wild House race a Trump test? Not so much.”

Whether Montana was a test for President Trump or not is hard to gauge, but what’s not is the media’s universal acknowledgement in the lead-up to Election Day that Montana absolutely was a test. Don’t take NTK’s word for it – see below for a few of the key stories written prior to polls closing:
