Ryan calls for 'close examination' of allegations Trump talked to Comey about FlynnHouse Speaker Paul Ryan
called for a "close examination" of allegations that President Trump tried to pressure ex-FBI chief James Comey to drop an investigation into ousted national security adviser Mike Flynn.
But Ryan said the GOP wants to gather information about the matter "before rushing to judgment" and
suggested the attacks against Trump are at least partly politically motivated. "There are some people out there who want to harm the president," Ryan said.
Ryan, like other Republicans, questioned why Comey did not disclose the conversation with Trump before being forced out of his job.
Ryan met Wednesday morning with his rank-and-file members at Republican Party headquarters near the Capitol. He told lawmakers "now is the time to get the pertinent information" about the allegations against the president and said he supports a move by the House Oversight Committee to obtain Comey's memo about his private conversation with Trump regarding Flynn.
Ryan said he had no plans to micromanage or "armchair quarterback" the individual committee investigations who are probing alleged connections between the Trump campaign and Russian officials, as well as Trump's decision last week to fire Comey.
Reporters asked Ryan, as he left the podium, whether he still has full confidence in the increasingly embattled president and he responded, "I do."
