BOSTON -- Baltimore Orioles All-Star center fielder Adam Jones was berated by racist taunts at Fenway Park while a bag of peanuts was thrown at him Monday night, calling it one of the worst cases of fan abuse he has heard in his career.

“A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me,’’ Jones said, “I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight. Thanks. Pretty awesome.’’

Jones, one of just 62 African-Americans on opening-day rosters this year, said he has been subjected to racist hecklings in the past at Fenway Park, but said this was one of the worst experiences of his 12-year career.

Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia, talking about Adam Jones' experience at Fenway Park on Monday night, said players expect racist taunts in Boston.

The veteran left-hander said it is talked about among black major leaguers.

"We know. There's 62 of us. We all know. When you go to Boston, expect it," Sabathia told reporters.

Talking Tuesday before the team's game against Toronto in New York, Sabathia said in his big league career, "I've never been called the N-word" anywhere but in Boston.

Sabathia said he has experienced what Jones did in Boston while traveling with the Cleveland Indians. He says he hasn't heard the same slurs while with the Yankees because the team has security guards that accompany players to the bullpen and other areas of the park.

"Even shagging in the outfield before the game sometimes you get it," said Sabathia, who says he told people what he was subjected to at the time, but it didn't resonate. "I was just in Cleveland, so nobody cared."

Sabathia says it's sad and infuriating that players still have to deal with racism in baseball in 2017.

"I'm glad that [Jones] spoke up and said something about it," Sabathia said. "I think it's disgusting."

The latest breakdown I could find was 2015.

Latin players: 29.3%
American blacks: 8.3%
Asian: 1.2%
Caucasian: 58.8%
Other? (unaccounted for to make 100%): 2.4%

However, this year almost 30% of opening day rosters were foreign born Hispanics.

Claiming that there is bias against blacks because of this is the same as saying there is bias against whites playing in the NBA.

That being said, fans can be very racist in almost all cities.

There has been lots of discussion about this in sports circles.  As to the lack of African American players.  Lots of contributing factors.

Normally it is the liberals twisting their explanations to fit a narrative.

And yes, there are pockets of racism everywhere.

Such proportions come down to who has what athletic chops and who choose what sports. I'll bet the number of blacks in curling is near or at zero.

Like so many businesses, a MLB team cannot afford to discriminate on the basis of race, because the player a team rejects for being ______ will be picked up by another team, making that team the stronger.

IIRC, several years ago MLB was involved in an outreach program to get more young black kids interested in baseball, but most of the urban kids think basketball or football is the way to go.

Football is the big high school sport here, but basketball is right up there with it. Baseball is way down the list as far as local news coverage of high school teams.
