If you could change only one event in history what would it be?

If you change an event from the somewhat distant past, realistically predict what the results would be today. Replies can challenge your predictions.

You can play this game multiple times, but you can change only one thing each time.

Example: I wish Al Gore would have been elected President in 2000.

Realistic result: We would still have a Republican Congress and Joe Lieberman as the Democratic nominee in 2008. However, oil prices would still be low, there would be no large scale Iraq war, and our economy would be growing at a reasonable pace.

It's a very big bonfire, so I'll bore everyone with only the primitives of prominence:

2. I would have made sure that all of the Republicans who were involved in Watergate were prosecuted and jailed. This would have stopped so much shit that has happened in the last 30 years.

Hmmm.  I thought they were.  Did I miss anybody?

10. The election of Ronald Reagan

Think of how much better off we'd be if Carter had gotten his second term and Reagan had faded into Alzheimer's and obscurity.

We'd still have a progressive income tax and not be in crippling debt.

We'd be much farther along in independence from oil.

Iran Contra, the BCCI mess, the hostage scandal, the S&L mess, and all the other fallout from Reagan's disastrous policies would not have happened.

Quite possibly, Bin Laden would never have been armed.

Over 200 Marines would still be alive, never having been sent to Lebanon.

The slide this country has been on started in 1969 when liberals went out of power. The election of Reagan turned the slide into a dead drop.

21. Eugene McCarthy would have been nominated and won the presidency in '68.

Of course, he was too much an intellectual elitist that nobody wanted to have a beer with, and couldn't have won.

25. Lincoln should not be assassinated. Hokey but relevant.

The South would have healed more quickly and I believe Civil Rights would have come sooner but who is to really know?

Well he was elected in 2000, so you got part of your wish.

The loutish Brit primitive, a primitive of prominence, makes a comment, but because the loutish Brit primitive isn't an American citizen, his opinion of America and Americans isn't worth excresence.

40. I wish that cereal crops had never been domesticated.

Realistic result: Far fewer humans are born. Those that are born have, on average, much longer lifespans, with malnutrition and disease practically unknown. Civilization and culture do not develop. Humans work an average of 5.5 hours per day, spending the rest of the day in leisure. Local ecological collapses are commonplace, but are easily recovered from.

That's all the primitives of prominence at this bonfire; but there's plenty of wishful dreaming among the unterprimitiven, the faceless lynch mob on Skins's island, so the bonfire's well worth reading in the original at the link above.

I wish the parents of the baby boomers, having worked so hard to provide them with everything (including fighting and winning a world war) would have slapped the whiny, ungrateful, lazy brats upside the head. Imagine no hippies...

I would make it so the Russian Army defeated the Bolsheviks in 1917. That would change a lot....and best of all, no DUmmies  :-)

Well, he fits his name.  I can't even imagine the long gas lines and horrible economic conditions we'd have suffered while Gore kissed up to Bin Laden and Hussein...not to mention the extra taxes for "carbon credits."

I'll add two what-ifs, being somewhat a fan of alternate history stories.

# 1.  Archduke Franz Ferdinand decides to put the roof on his motor carriage up after the first assasination attempt.  Result, the assasin doesn't see the Archduke in the vehicle and never discharges his pistol into the vehicle.  No WW1, no bolshevik revolution, no Soviet Union, no third reich, and the United States takes about twenty years longer to become the economic powerhouse it did in the real world.

# 2.  George C. Marshall's mission to China is unsuccessful.  Chang Kai Shek completes his defeat of the Chinese Communists led by Mao Tse Tung.  Russia has to invest more earlier into it's defense of it's Chinese border.  No Chinese intervention on behalf of the Korean communists.  No Vietnam.  Likely an earlier collapse of the Iron curtain in Europe.

Something tells me the DUmmies won't even think of these.

There's a reason why patriotism is considered a conservative value. Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

A large part of it is that they shielded them way too much. My father, a boomer himself, said his dad would not normally share details of what he saw in WWII. I think keeping these 'warrior tales' from children as they form values probably isn't a good thing.

Hardship for a lot of boomers as children was unknown too.

I'm saying this knowing my dad got his ass whooped better then any child today would have. Discipline was not the issue.

I think we'll see more of the same in 20 years as children get coddled beyond reproach today too and some folks need them wrapped in bubble wrap in order to ensure their safety.

Iran Contra, the BCCI mess, the hostage scandal...........

This shows just how DUmb the DUmmies are..............Iran Contra was a Congressional dog and pony show, designed to embarass the Reagan administration. The Boland amendment in which the hearings were based, was declared unconstitutional by the USSC......the Congress impeded the Executive Branch in conducting foreign affairs.

BCCI involved Bert Lance and the Carter Administration.................

The hostage "scandal" was on Jimmy Carter's watch, caused by Carter...

DUmmies, learn some actual history before you post
